MSNBC's Banfield Slams War Coverage

Editor's Note: The following is the text of MSNBC correspondent Ashleigh Banfield's Landon Lecture given at Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kansas, on April 24. Her comments sparked a media controversy which reportedly prompted her NBC employers to severely reprimand Banfield. While she has not commented on the issue, an NBC spokeswoman told reporters Monday, "She and we both agreed that she didn't intend to demean the work of her colleagues, and she will choose her words more carefully in the future."

7. I wondered what happened to her also back then.
She was a rising star and had been on TV every day during the invasion of Afghanistan and then she suddenly disappeared.

I finally came across that speech that got her crushed and as Cenk said, loved her even more.

Donohue, Aaron Brown, and a few others whose names I can't remember, and of course Dan Rather, anyone who tried to to do actual news, all disappeared during that horrible period. Even someone as respected as Christiane Amanpour, was sidelined after making 'controversial' comments, not as strong as Asleigh Banfield's, but she did say they could not report what they were seeing. And she too was gone after being attacked by Fox. And Helen Thomas, relegated to the back of the room and not allowed to ask questions.

As Banfield said in that speech, people were afraid, after seeing what happened to Hollywood activists, like Susan Sarandon, and airc, Sean Penn who lost a $10 million contract after speaking out. He sued, and won, I think.

But what really is shameful is that so few stood up when they saw their colleagues, like her, being treated this way. A couple years after the worst of this, I remember only one Newspaper writing an apology for not speaking out.

Better to lose or quit your job, than be part of the takeover of your country by a cabal of criminals whose idea of what America should be, is frightening and proved to be deadly for so many innocent people.

She can sleep at night for trying at least. And mostly for not falling for the glamor and the money and access as temptation to betray her principles as a journalist and as a citizen.

Glad she's back. I'm sure if they let her, she will report honestly on these wars. Too bad it has to be after Bush, the culprit himself, is gone.

8. No surprise she's Canadian born-bred. . .
. . .which explains her courage to stand alone in April, 2003 against MSNBC News' push for Iraq war. . ."thinking Canadians" were our conscience during Vietnam war as well.

Let's put a face on that asshole Neal Shapiro(MSNBC news prez 2003) who humiliated her with a tape closet for an office for 10 months. . .

Veeeeery interesting. . .looks like his wife JuJu Chang works for ABC, too. . .Ms Banfield will have to avoid seeing the asshole at holiday parties.. .LOL!

Good luck to this rare JOURNALIST ASHLEIGH BANFIELD . . .may she keep Mark Twain's warning in mind. . .

"Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear—not absence of fear."

14. Awww, sh*t! I just realized who Neal Shapiro is.
He's the Program Director now at WNET Channel 13 in NYC (PBS).

Which makes me incredibly puzzled as to why he did what he did....

10. Gotta admit....
Never heard of her. I still think Amy Goodman is the best journalist on TV.

Maybe "2003" after the "April 24" would have been a helpful addition (pickimg nits is my specialty...)

13. Great coverage.
I had no idea they were doing that to journalists. I figured they just fired them and gave them bad references.

That they are actively putting people into limbo reveals just how contrived out media coverage really is, and how afraid they are of real reporters. The founding fathers, flawed as they were, wouldn't even recognize the America we have today. And I am not talking about technology either.

16. Time will tell, but I honestly believe television "news" dysfunction
is systemic to it's current structure, it's all just a matter of degree. The underlying and unstated message of the traditional corporate media structure is corporate supremacy over that of the American People and it makes no difference which network a journalist is working for. They're paychecks are dependent on keeping the boss happy and that boss's paycheck is dependent on keeping the owner and/or corporate commercial buying clients happy, the American People's best interests are at best third and when we have an autocratic government in power ie: Cheney/Bush, the people's best interests drops to fourth.

I believe over the long haul this kind of situation is carcinogenic to our democratic republic.

I do wish Ashleigh Banfield the best.

Thanks for the thread, democracy1st.

Doubt anything has changed in broadcast "journalism" though. I hope she hasn't compromised on anything.
