1. Sorry, but if I never see another angry commentator --
righty or lefty -- ranting into their screencam, it will be too soon.

From my experience, there's only one professional ranter worth looking at, and that's Lewis Black. And his rants work because he's a real writer and standup comic. I'll pass on the rest, thanks.

3. The problem is that the rant is all we have left.
In Sara the right has the perfect leader because she knows all the talking points and repeats them well....and her sheep hear hear voice and follow.
There is no effective way that I know of to counter that kind of an opponent other than the rant, because there is no way to counter the talking point with facts. You can quote all the facts and even the common sense of the point in question and they stick to the talking point and insist that it is true.
They have disabled truth as a weapon in the war of ideas.

All we have left is love or the occasional rant...

4. I don't buy it. Reasonable people (e.g., voters) gave their verdict on Palin last year.
While McCain was pretty much doomed anyway, the selection of Palin sealed his fate. Since then she's just descended deeper and deeper into the slough of stupid that spawned her in the first place. She's the perfect leader only for the moron-American vote, which is somewhere south of 25% of the people. For everyone else, she's a turd on the bottom of the shoe.

And, the press hates her (as much as they enjoy interviewing her), so she's gonna get sandbagged every time she looks like she's really running for something. And it won't be hard because she's really clueless. All she's got going for her is the babe factor and a shrew's tongue, which when added up doesn't amount to much.

I want her to stay prominent in the Republic Party. It will make 2010 and 2012 that much easier.

5. Well my comment was not really about Palin.
It was about us and how the right wing has killed truth as an argument.

But stupid is there base and they are holding on to it by having someone like Palin out there repeating the TP.

6. And my reply is that while they may have killed the truth for their trog adherents . . .
And the media is totally unreliable where the truth is concerned, nevertheless regular people -- who make up a substantial majority of voters -- are still able to tell the difference between shit and shinola without too much difficulty, and they know that Palin (and her ilk) isn't something you want on your shoes.

7. shit and shinola ...that is a phrase I have not heard for a while.
And i do agree that most people see right through it if they are paying attention.
but that is kind of the problem...many are not paying attention, and many have just given up and don't bother to vote because they are bombarded with the ideas that the fix is always in....and they have reason to believe that. But what they fail to see is that not voting is just what the right wing wants.
Somehow we have to change that.

8. I find that even people who have never heard the phrase "shit from shinola" . . .
(which was already archaic when I first heard it) still get it. It's most useful.

With regard to the substance of your response, I guess I'm a little more hopeful. Yes, most people don't really pay attention to politics or the political media, and most people are probably pretty cynical about politicians generally.

As well they should be.

They probably don't even think in terms of right wing and left wing in the same way that most DUers do.

The way to change it? Inspiring politicians like Obama, like Feingold, like (although he's pressing his luck these days) Grayson, like Weiner, even (on a good day) like Biden.

Education. Organization.

And frankly, a gradual replacement of the Blue Dogs and their ilk with centrist democrats instead of rightwing democrats.

In our favor, the wingnuts are in disarray, are fracturing along more faults than rupture in an Roland Emmerich movie, and the 'Lican circular firing squads are loading their third magazines. This is a great time of opportunity, and I have some hope we can seize the day.

9. Yes it was a favorite saying of my father.
But I have always liked the saying that to be fore warned is to be forearmed...so I pay more attention to how they will attack and try to nullify objections and counter attacks.

And having said that I agree with all of that....education and organization.
