Yes, he wanted single payer, but rather than sulk when he didn't get his way he chose to work actively to get a bill that contains at least some provisions for ordinary Americans. Sadly, any bill was going to have to be watered down to pass the House. This is not the bill any of us wanted, but it's what we have to work with right now. Real changes can still come later, as they did with Social Security and Medicare.

Weiner did not surrender, he compromised -- something only one of his colleagues across the aisle was willing to do, but only after passage of the bill was guaranteed. Same as going into the showroom wanting to buy a Lexus, but coming away with a pre-owned Honda Accord because it's all your budget will allow.
