Peaceful preaching inside, violent message outside a New York mosque

By Drew Griffin and Kathleen Johnston, CNN

Investigation into why authorities are concerned about the violent messages being preached outside a New York mosque.

New York (CNN) -- Outside a Manhattan mosque where the imam preaches against terrorism, the brothers of the "Revolution Muslim" are spreading a different message.

Protected by the Constitution of the country they detest, radical Muslim converts like Yousef al-Khattab and Younes Abdullah Mohammed preach that the killing of U.S. troops overseas is justified. In their thinking, so were the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States -- and so are attacks on almost any American.

"Americans will always be a target -- and a legitimate target -- until America changes its nature in the international arena,"

Mohammed said in an interview to air on tonight's "AC 360."

Al-Khattab and Mohammed consider al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden their model.

"I love him like I can't begin to tell you, because he doesn't seem to have done anything wrong from the sharia," al-Khattab said, referring to Islamic law. "If you're asking me if I love him as a Muslim, I love him more than I love myself.

"Authorities say their language walks "right up to the line" of free speech protection.

4. At Least, Sir, He Did Not Suggest Mossad....
The basic line of the fellow above would be to claim a 'false flag' operation, for several possible purposes. One would be to carry out 'terror attacks' that were actually ordered by the U.S. government, but made to look like the work of Moslems. This is a sturdy perennial among those with more than usually 'busy' minds. One would be to serve as a species of 'honey-trap', enticing people into actions, all details of which would be known to the authorities from the start. One would be to establish credentials for infiltration, for recruitment as an asset by jihadi operatives looking for reliable people who could operate successfully in the United States.

5. Unfortunately the scenarios you described happen frequently sir. The Miami 7.
Although I suppose sir, that you would be of the opinion that the FBI informant in the Miami 7 case was not fanning the flames and keeping the plot alive?

7. The Latter Two, Sir, Are Certainly Legitimate Investigative Techniques
The basic 'honey trap' variant does not capture genuine threats, of course, but it does function like locking your car door; it keeps the amateurs out. There is some benefit to people coming to fear contact with people who say they can procure weapons, explosives, etc., for attacks against citizens and government facilities. It is not much different than the frequent cases where someone starts talking about wanting to hire someone to kill a spouse, and finds themselves in company with a state trooper in mufti posing as a 'hit man'.

The idea of setting up something for purposes of infiltration or recruitment is pretty much a long shot, but might be worth taking, on the nothing ventured, nothing gained principle.

None of this, however, can be taken as evidence that is what is actually going on here. The world is full of fools, and a proportion of fools are malicious, after all....

8.  However, entrapment and inciting violence are not
legitimate investigative techniques. Unfortunately, Sir, that line is often crossed, as appears to be the case with the Miami 7 for example.

9. Entrapment, Sir, Is a Very Difficult Defense To Pull Off
The legal line was not crossed in the case you refer to. Just a bit of advice: if someone says they can secure weapons for you to employ against the U.S. government, go directly to the police or the F.B.I., with an accurate description and all particulars about the person you are aware of, and break off all contact with him or her unless instructed to act otherwise by law enforcement personnel....

6. For all we know they might think the CIA and Mossad are one and the same

Thank-you for your concise explanation. I've been coming across several posters saying that the Taliban attacks in Pakistan must be CIA operations, too. I kind of feel sorry for these people "with more than usually 'busy' minds", as you so aptly put it. I have a feeling that 8 years of Bushco being in power have irreparably addled their brains.
