The entire episode of wingnut hypocrisy is the case of the Fort Hood shootings is, perhaps, most amusingly and sadly illustrated by this quick exchange from last night's Larry King Live on CNN between former POW Shoshana Johnson (captured along with Jessica Lynch) and wingnut attorney and JAG officer Tom Kenniff...

21. She's also the daughter of career military. I could tell the minute I heard her on the radio
years ago, from the way she spoke.

I've no doubt other military kids and military personnel picked up on that.

28. alot of us are getting really sick of "pussy" = hateful, weak guy
or conversely, "balls" = equals good, strong, manly (even if the *ahem* "manly" one is a woman)

maybe Shoshana would feel the same way...

just sayin

32. You're right.
Precisely.

Which is why it might be a better solution to, rather than using such sexually AND emotionally loaded terms, to simply revert to more appropriate ones, as in: have the courage to ..., or have the spine to ..., etc.

One doesn't always have to criticize another based on their gender, and it's not merely a matter of being politically correct/incorrect. It just requires taking an extra moment or two to think about an alternative word. Is that asking so much?

If someone else has a better suggestion, please school me.

54. No, I don't. I'll have to look that up... Yikes.
All I remember was that POW tape where she (and her fellow hostages) looked so incredibly frightened. And then when they came home. Seems like most of the coverage was about Jessica Lynch. :-(

55. The references may be difficult to find.
I also recall her refusal to address the question of her treatment by the AMERICAN lieutenant. Quite likely she was ordered not to comment as his behaviour toward her was most unbecoming. Disgusting, actually.

What I remember was her appearing on news shows discussing her POW experience, which had to be very terrifying. :-(

I'd appreciate any references to the treatment that you refer to. Lately, we've been hearing more about the egregious treatment of women in the military. x(

17. she was a cook
I don't know her MOS but he was a lawyer (safer than a cook in the military), she was not a fighter (although she said that she did fire one bullet at the "tree line"), but she was shot and held as a POW after being captured in combat, she pawned? that cheap ass lawyer on that.

How could that idiot not know who he was talking to and how could he think that a lawyer MOS makes him a warrior.

47. I agree...
PTSD really is a gift. Our bullshit detectors trip very easily--and we are more efficient
at detecting bullshit and also responding to it.

I know PTSD is very difficult. However, I've come to view it as a series of essential adaptations
that were life saving. But now that our traumas are over--we need to slowly learn that it's ok
to iteratively let go of those coping mechanisms and adaptations that served us so well. And
probably saved our lives and our sanity.

But I tell ya--some of the hypervigilance can be a gift. I know when someone is a fake or when
someone is incredibly dysfunctional. I can usually detect other PTSDers (even if they haven't
even begun to deal with their issues) almost immediately. It's almost like being prescient
sometimes. It's good, but it can feel like a curse.

50. I hadn't really thought of PTSD as a gift
Most people who know I have PTSD think I should have gotten over it and that's not happening. It’s almost like a chemical reaction.

Hypervigilant is another word I have never used in relationship to myself, but it fits when I am a passenger in the front seat of a car as I was during the accident. I was badly injured, airlifted, spent a month in a trauma hospital and have mobility problems to this day. I was conscious the entire time. I understand you have less PTSD if you don't remember.

Recently at work I was forced to ride in the front seat of a van with an arrogant jerk at the wheel. I told the jerk to watch out for a dude in a top heavy camper. Said jerk ignored me and drove on through where upon top heavy camper came into our lane and almost took us out. Everybody in the van was talking about how clairvoyant I was. Grrrr. That was me on high alert. I am still having trouble with my anger at my co-workers especially arrogant jerk who ignored my warning. I finally told the supervisor why I was so reluctant to go on road trips with my co-workers and he seemed to understand.

Clairvoyant my ass. My "clairvoyance" was earned the hard way.

26. Her voice is very authoritative. Too bad she didn't make it to officer.
I really like the way that true military people can cut through the bullshit from other servicemen. The Army, for instances, doesn't get much respect from the other branches, but those people are right there on the ground where the action is. Nobody better tell them about combat, because they know that "being in Iraq" doesn't exactly mean you were assigned to a red zone.

I would love to see Army soldiers have a debate with the snooty Air Force people. Most of the kids that made it into the Air Force Academy have attitudes. But everyone knows that it's the branch that sees less hand to hand combat. Sure, they think they're smart because they're going to get the big bucks at retirement, but only a few of them are ever trained as pilots.
