5. There's (at least) one route to trouble and one route to disaster . . .

The route to trouble is to think the party is dead already and get lazy and unresponsive to the principles that energize democrats and progressives: the Republics come roaring back with their wacko ideas intact and, regaining power, begin dismantling the country again.

The route to disaster is through the fever swamp that is the shrinking Republic party, where stews the next Lee Harvey Oswald or John Wilkes Booth: lone (maybe) or conspiratorial gunmen, driven to the edge by the sick unreality of their political milieu, ready to change the course of history through assassination and terrorism.
