accurate, I think.
Going to the source of the anti-Obama movement means first of all to getting away from the big cities and plunging into rural America.
We are now in eastern Virginia in the heart of the Appalachian mountains. Ronald (?) is a former Marine and he exhibits his firearms proudly, a nine-shot revolver and a carbine made in China. (I do not transcribe the English comments but rather the French translations of them.) Ronald fought in Viet Nam. His buddies also, his former military pals. In his little, dusty house, he spends hours (thinking about) reforming (recreating) the world.
In their universe, Barack Obama was not born in the United States and should, therefore, never have been elected president. He is a Kenyan national and was born in Kenya. In my opinion, if one wants to take responsibility for this country, one should be able to produce a birth certificate. If not, I say you are an imposter.
That’s not the only reason that Ron and his friends have not been able to stomach Obama’s election. He has never been able to produce his birth certificate. These men are, for example, persuaded that the president is a Muslim and, worse yet in their eyes, a socialist. Ron says, “If you look at his health care insurance program, it’s socialism from the beginning. So, what do you want us to think?”
The welcoming committee is rather rude. The visitors are militant Democrats sent to this rural corner of American to explain and defend the reform lead by the White House. The task is difficult. In this area, Obama made a short speech last November. Ron and his friends are there to sabotage the event. The Democratic side minimizes the popularity of the opposition . “55% of Americans want reform right now.” People are really supportive (not sure I can hear and understand the French here) in the rest of the country.
Tom Comstock, this fierce opponent of Obama is convinced that the wind is turning, so convinced that he has decided to enter politics.
Here he is as a candidate for a congressional seat in 2010. “Here we are. It is here that I began to get in contact with the other conservatives in the area (upon entering an office) and since then I started my campaign.” Because the extreme-conservative movement was accused of racism, this new entrant into politics avoids all personal attacks. “It has nothing to do with his religion or his skin color, nothing at all or any of those things. But I am against the fact that Obama is trying to impose on our lives an increasing number of decisions by the government, and that, against our wills”. A year after his election, Barack Obama remains relatively popular, but Comstock is convinced that the large majority is at the beginning of a conservative revolution.
