Jackson: We Care About Divorce Too ... But We're Not Going To Spend Millions Fighting That

http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/jackson-we-care-about-divorce-too-were-not-going-spend-millions-fighting

Appearing on MSNBC, Bishop Harry Jackson insists that the Religious Right's fight against marriage equality is really part of a two-pronged effort to protect marriage as an institution, with the second prong being the fight against divorce.

I don't know about you, but I don't recall having seen them dump millions of dollars into the latter.

Speaking of the vote in Maine, Jackson said "the church was the engine behind the machine, but the argument was sociological in that people really believe that the society would be tampered with, that this is an experiment that we can't afford to have at the expense of children at schools around the country":

1. This tactic is just disgusting.
Using kids as an excuse to perpetrate their bigotry? They know that having people of the same sex marry will have ZERO impact on anyone? What, do they think that once kids realize they don't have to chase the girl or the boy, they'll become gay? Ridiculous. It's hardwired into your being. You are or you aren't. The idea that homosexuality is somehow like swine flu and your kids will get it in school is beyond ignorant and beyond the pale.

Personally, I don't find men's hairy backsides all that appealing, but if you do, then have at it. As long as it's not MY backside. :) Has no impact on me whatsoever. If they want to be as miserable as heterosexual married couples, then let them have that right!

Not really.

It's all "gay" or "not gay" these days. Where'd all the bi's go?

It seems to me that in reality there is a set of people who are 100% straight. And a set that are 100% gay. The straight set is most likely larger than the gay set. But largest of all is that set in the middle that covers everyone who just "did it once" to those who are 50/50....and all shades in-between.. Human sexuality is complicated.

Anyway, marriage is a made up thing that is mostly about property. Gay-hating is big business for the church. It's a big guilt-money maker!

2. Sometimes America seems so barbaric...
I can't tell you how many times I've read an article entitled "Woman marries her dog" or "Man marries his bird". I can't believe how archaic we as a society sometimes still are. I'm a straight male but let me just say, in this fucked up world we sometimes live in, where everybody is just following their daily routine of coffee and labor, slowly marching towards their graves, the idea that our society feels it has the right to stop 2 people who just want something as normal as marriage and happiness and maybe even eternal love is just wrong.

4. Yep. Worse than that.
As a kid, I was indoctrinated into this sort of bullshit.

Fortunately it didn't take me long to shrug it off when I got out into the real world, and discovered gay people are in fact, human beings too.

3. Any church who donates to political campaigns should lose their tax exemption.

5. If we really believe we are all equal, then we must rise
above this foolishness. This guy, as a black man, should be able to relate to the pain of living in a society that considers you less than equal. I'm guessing he didn't choose to be black.

6. Shouldn't this be considered un-Constitutional...
The only reason it isn't allowed seems to be a religious one, which goes against our Constitution's separation of church and state. How aren't lawyers eating this case alive. America WAS NOT founded as a Christian nation, as a matter of fact In 1797 America made a treaty with Tripoli, declaring that "the government of the United States is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion." It is illegal for Govt. to display religious symbols in federal buildings, so what is the reasoning behind not letting gays get married if not a religious one?

7. What do children at schools have to do with it?
Just more religious BS.

They ain't worried about what that does to children at schools.

Unrelated buzz words....like "children" and "way of life" and "ACORN" are a sure sign that they really have no argument.

11. I think it's ironic that they're talking to a black guy about this-
Edited on Fri Nov-06-09 09:38 PM by WhoIsNumberNone
-and getting this response. He looks old enough to have been alive during Jim Crow- You think if they'd had a referendum on it that people in the south would have chosen to get rid of it?
The majority is wrong sometimes, Harry.
