From Sam Keen's "Faces of the Enemy" (Keen's work on examine the psychology behind enmity and war and the ways in which people dehumanize enemies through propaganda and bigotry) ... On 12/24/1985 David Rice tied the family up, chloroformed them into unconsciousness, split their heads open with a steam iron and "stirred" their brains with a knife. Rice targeted the family because he was told they were communists (the husband of the family was civil rights attorney Charles Goldmark.)

Some of the things that stood out:

Rice was under financial stress
He was paranoid and fearful
He was frustrated over the direction of the country
He was influenced by the words of Christian right
He viewed himself as a soldier in a war though he never served in an military branch

There's more to the doc ... I'll post the rest of the interview tomorrow

2. It's people like David Rice who make my opposition to the death penalty very tenuous.
That guy is an animal who needs to be destroyed. Not kept alive in a prison or a mental institution. Executed.

And what is with that guy Mohr and the Russian invasion bullshit? Un-frickin believable.

10. Well he is a creature of our own making.
So I am against killing our mistakes....better to keep them alive and learn from it.
But the rhetoric of Beck and Rush are nothing new....it goes way back to people like the General and organizations like The John Birch Society and the KKK.
But in those days they did not have the attention of the major media like they do now....now they have there own network of radio and TV, and so we are in more danger then ever from the nut jobs of this world.

12. You can include yourself in that "creature of OUR own making" but I decline to take
credit for David Rice and his ilk.

But I do agree with the part about being in more danger than ever from the nut jobs of this world.

Me too....if for no other reason that we know now that certain behaviors are encouraged by your genes. Our environment presents opportunities to act on these hereditary instincts. There is some general behavior that make Rice fall for his role as protector and executioner. The victims and forms it takes he does indeed get from his envioronment.... But I didn't make him have the impulse to act on the loony stuff he heard. 1000s of others heard the same stuff and didn't do what he did. If he hadn't done this for one reason, he may have for another. The very structure of his brain makes him compelled to act on the stimuli he receives in what has become a tragic way. He's nuts.... fundies, commies or no.

19. Indeed I am as we all are.
And that is the point we are as good as we are healthy both socially and physically.
If you were a Doctor of social medicine you might see these people as symptoms of a social illness.
The we in all of this is society as a whole.

16. If you are a member of the rabid christian right, then he is your
product. He is no product of mine or the world I live in nor any of my friends. He is only one of the many miscreants of the christian right waiting for a target to vent their carefully and intentionally orchestrated rage. In this case he was a wasted bullet sadly and horrifically destroying the lives of totally innocent people. He has wasted his chance here on this earth and cannot be given another and should be glad for a painless demise.

20. We cannot continue to separate ourselves.
Saying and thinking that it is them and not us....we are all in it together and no solution can be found as long as we are divided into camps.

No I think that it is just as much our fault as theres....we have failed in our educational system and allowed true christianity to hum a tune in the background, and never once challenged them when they spouted things that would make Jesus himself pissed.

The first time a good man that believes in Jesus heard a preacher say something that contradicted the teachings of Jesus he should have stood up and challenged it right there....but it probably never happened because most would just murmur to themselves and separate themselves to a place that is more appealing.
Lies must be challenged with truth and that is the responsibility that shirk far too often.

22. Maybe, if you are an adherent to the christian mythology. I am not. Your thesis that
we are all in it together goes against what thousands of years of recorded history tell us: we are animals who live in herds and prey on others to get what we want. Some of us have learned that cooperation makes our lives easier and less painful and allows us to multiply relatively unimpeded. This learning might be attributed to religion or philosophy or education or enlightenment of some kind, but it's far from universal even if we'd like to believe otherwise.

I must admit that I personally hope that more of us are learning that we can coexist with others if we are willing to respect them and they are willing to respect us.

In truth, it's usually those who claim to be listening to some great guru or spiritual leader who seem to be most willing and eager to separate themselves from others, even to the point of permanent separating the others.

We may all be on the planet together, but that's about as far as it goes for most of us.

24. Well my view is less negative and far more complex.
Biologically we are animals but there is more to life than just it's biology....and that is where the complexity comes in.
And your view of recorded history is all about wars and conflict which is the history of kings and rulers, not of the many people that have lived in harmony with nature and society. their history is never written or told.
We only know the history that was recorded and survived time.

8. He has freaky eyes.
He speaks like an intelligent man but he obviously lacks the ability to reason, to discern truth from lies. And he's the lowest form of human being, one who blames others for his own sucky life.

I know.... he trained for a WHOLE YEAR!

I trained for 4 whole years and didn't get a decent job until 5 years later.....and I have the most unessential job ever... of Costume Designer!!!!!!

What a "victim"! See, it's in his very makeup, to be victimized. The Commies kept him from getting a welding job after a single year of training. Ooooo kay! Let's murder a whole family over it!

21. I was going to make a similar comment.
How many on DU have been looking for work for a year or more, and how many of that group have turned to murder to ease their distress? You're right, he was born a victim and there are lots of people just like him, mainly repuglicans.

11. I found this video clip fascinating.
What I have gotten from it so far is how easy it is to manipulate a vulnerable person's mind and their behavior to the point they become a killer. I think this vulnerability may explain some of the political killings in our country as well.

I think Sam Keen did a brilliant job of interviewing Rice. I am looking forward to part 2.

23. The Colonel says that Russian troops invaded the U.S. on Dec 3, 1976. That was on
Gerald Ford's watch. How could that be??

That guy Rice looks and talks like a simple-minded person. But one you wouldn't recognize as a fanatic unless you spent time talking with him in depth.
