WOMAN: It meant everything to me that I was able to put the person who attacked me behind bars. And what allowed me to do that was our judicial process. I showed up in court every day to make sure that happen

VITTER: And I'm absolutely supportive of any case like that being prosecuted criminally to the full extent of the law.

WOMAN: But there are rape victims who are being kept silent.

WOMAN: But how can you support a law that tells a rape victim that she does not have the right to defend herself?

VITTER: Ma'am The language in question did not say that in any way shape or form.

WOMAN: But it is unconstitutional to have a law that says a woman does not have a right to defend herself.

VITTER: You realize Mr. Obama was against that amendment that his administration was against that amendment

WOMAN: But I'm not asking Obama. I'm asking you.

VITTER: Do you think he's in favor in rape?

WOMAN: I'm asking you Senator. What if it was your daughter who was raped? Would you tell her to be quiet and take it? Would you tell your daughter to be silent?

4. TPM has a good, short piece on this. (WH wanted a more enforceable amendment)
Edited on Mon Nov-02-09 11:40 AM by quiet.american
The department (Department of Defense) argued that it and its subcontractors "may not be in a position to know about such things," i.e., whether contractors employ the mandatory arbitration clauses. "Enforcement would be problematic," the note read, because contractors may not be privy to what's in their subcontractors' contracts.

The department suggests that "it may be more effective" to seek a law that would prohibit the clauses in any business contracts within U.S. jurisdiction.

The White House does say it supports "the intent of the amendment," spokesman Tommy Vietor told TPM.

Vietor also said the White House is working with legislators to rework the amendment "to make sure it is enforceable."

6. I'd like to see him produce that from any verifiable source.
Given Obama's recent actions concerning gay rights, hate crime legislation, etc...I really don't see that as being true. Also, if it was true I am sure Limbeck would be screaming it from the rooftops.

15. He interrupted her before she stated her case. He proceeded to talk over her. Then, he walked away
from her with the only audible sentence - do you think Obama wants..... .

That is why we needed a translation.

Thanks to the woman who had the guts to approach that unamerican hater.

9. Is anybody really surprised?
Republicans aren't just the party of "no" anymore. They are now the party of "rape."

This only adds to their internal battles within the party, and it will only continue to grow. The G.O.P. continues to become more and more irrelevant.

At the very least he should have taken the woman's name and phone number to make a follow-up appointment. Poor Louisiana - Vitter, Landrieu, Jindahl - utter alternate universe.

13. A criminal trial is not enough. The rape victim should be
entitled to damages for civil damages for assault and battery. Senator Vitter should understand that. Obama who is a lawyer should have learned that in his first year of law school. Shame on them all. If the wording of the bill or amendment proposed by Senator Franken was not acceptable, then Senator Vitter or Obama should have proposed the wording they would have preferred. Shame on them.

And I will bet that Vitter pretends to be a Catholic and pretends to oppose abortion. What if the woman has a baby due to the rape? Isn't she due enough compensation from a party that facilitated or covered up the rape to permit her to take care of her child?

18. I'm pretty pissed.
He didn't even have the decency to properly represent the White House's position on this. That's all he had to do.

What fucking group is he pandering to by opposing this, with his justification? Rapists?

19. Hey Vitter YOU LIE!
From the HuffingtonPost article:

Vitter's excuse here doesn't exactly hold water. While the Obama Defense Department raised concerns about the reach of the Franken amendment, the White House itself said it supported "the intent" and was working to make sure it was "enforceable."

With apologies to The Rolling Stones...

How is the jerk even still in Congress? What a goddamn coward to just walk away like that. Glad he's there to listen attentively to his constituents. Whaddya bet he screens the audience for these meetings a bit more carefully next time?

Pure scum!

27. Of course the answer is yes.
If it was in his best political interest, the mere interests of his daughter would not matter.
