Swashbuckler (he's in the picture somewhere; it was taken the day he was born 14 mos ago) has this nifty new trick. I touch his nose and he touches mine. He likes attention. Touching my nose has become his way of letting me know he wants his neck scratched.



Spitfire (Mama in the above) got out for a few days last month. I had set an animal trap for some feral cats and found Spiffie in it one morning. Now that she's seen how hard it is to get food "out there", she's been real, real sweet since coming back in here.

As for the remaining ferals who populated my yard, I have two adults (who are Buccaneer's and Spitfire's younger siblings) and three kittens in my back bedroom. The adults, brother and sister, I called Flash Gordon and Dale Arden while they were outside; I have decided that now that they are in, they will be called Coyote and Isis.

Coyote got his name when he was trapped. One thing real coyotes do is take the bait from traps set for them and then crap on the trap. This is why Native Americans made Coyote the trickster god. This cat got up on the porch and looked at me standing the other side of the door. He got in the trap, very carefully stepping over the trigger mechanism with his forepaws to the bait, a small can full of dray cat food. He ate that for a minute or two, carefully came back out and stood at the door with a real pleased look on his face as he raised his right paw and extended his middle claw. Then hubris got the best of him, just as it ofen got the best of the Coyote of Native American lore. He went back in the trap and started eating more of the bait, this time carefully stepping over the trigger mechanism with all fours. Unfortunately for him, he couldn't get back out quite as gracefully. The door snapped shut on the cage. He was mine.

My plans are to take him and his sister to get neutered and then take them to a TNR center. That's better than letting the pound have them. As for the kittens, the same probably awaits them, but I'll see if any of them show signs of adapting to domestic life first, like Buckie and Spiffie did.
