“Send Them Home With a Bullet in the Head”
I’ve gone on the record disagreeing with the term ‘Teabaggers’ and with the use of the word ‘un-American’ - I’ve done so because despite the astroturfing and the faux-grassroots opposition to health care reform, I place a premium on citizen activism and I don’t want to tarnish legitimate protesters, even if I strongly disagree with their politics and ideology. There’s no denying that some Americans have real fears and genuine disagreements with Democratic policies and it is wrong to assail their right to protest.

I have, however, singled out racists and other assorted Obama haters, some of whom are intent on inciting violence. They should be spared no scorn and should be universally condemned. Their actions are not about protest and dissent but about hate and violence.

I am deeply concerned that the summer of 2009 has set the stage for bloodshed to come. The kind of rage we’re seeing, based on Limbaugh, Coulter and Hannity-style soundbites, is dangerous. It’s like a cancer that grows with time and we need to be vigilant in defending against it.

In that regard, check out this video from outside President Obama’s NH visit. And listen for these words:

“Illegals should be sent home with a bullet in the head”

“Read what Jefferson said about the Tree of Liberty - it’s coming baby.”

7. "The moment of honest to Hitler fascism is begun and our last chance to stop it" Read this:
8/07/09...From Facism: are we there yet at Crooks & Liars:

“…That description sounds eerily like the dire straits our Congressional Republicans find themselves in right now. Though the GOP has been humiliated, rejected, and reduced to rump status by a series of epic national catastrophes mostly of its own making, its leadership can't even imagine governing cooperatively with the newly mobilized and ascendant Democrats. Lacking legitimate routes back to power, their last hope is to invest the hardcore remainder of their base with an undeserved legitimacy, recruit them as shock troops, and overthrow American democracy by force. If they can't win elections or policy fights, they're more than willing to take it to the streets, and seize power by bullying Americans into silence and complicity.
When that unholy alliance is made, the third stage -- the transition to full-fledged government fascism -- begins.

Snip

“…the guessing game is over. We know beyond doubt that the Teabag movement was created out of whole cloth by astroturf groups like Dick Armey's FreedomWorks and Tim Phillips' Americans for Prosperity, with massive media help from FOX News. We see the Birther fracas -- the kind of urban myth-making that should have never made it out of the pages of the National Enquirer -- being openly ratified by Congressional Republicans. We've seen Armey's own professionally-produced field manual that carefully instructs conservative goon squads in the fine art of disrupting the democratic governing process -- and the film of public officials being terrorized and threatened to the point where some of them required armed escorts to leave the building. We've seen Republican House Minority Leader John Boehner applauding and promoting a video of the disruptions and looking forward to "a long, hot August for Democrats in Congress."
This is the sign we were waiting for -- the one that tells us that yes, kids: we are there now. America's conservative elites have openly thrown in with the country's legions of discontented far right thugs. They have explicitly deputized them and empowered them to act as their enforcement arm on America's streets, sanctioning the physical harassment and intimidation of workers, liberals, and public officials who won't do their political or economic bidding.
This is the catalyzing moment at which honest-to-Hitler fascism begins. It's also our very last chance to stop it..."

This is about stopping the majority democratic agenda by the haters who are supported by those willing to destroy our democracy rather than be unable to regain power...and those who are profiteering by a fascist corporate state. "We the people"...are the governing majority these loons want to bring down. These tea bagging violent thugs don't represent the majority and must be stopped from tearing our nation apart.

8. Scary reading.
What should we do? It strikes me that the more their antics are publicly revealed and reviled the more outrageously they behave. I'd like to see them thrown in jail at their own expense, but they hide behind "free speech" and in so doing, pose as patriotic americans.

I am personally beginning to feel threated by this vile minority and my response is ANGER.

9. Great post Bjobotts
I recently started watching "World at War" 1974, a 26 hour BBC Documentary on World War 2. The first episode describes the rise of Hitler, how he was put into power, and what kind of social problems were occurring in 1933, in the midst of the Great Depression.

It is actually quite frightening to see that we have much of the same environment present today that was present in 1933 - 1939. My wife and I were in shock, watching in awed silence at the similarities to what we see today.

It's a great series that doesn't pick sides, but goes to great lengths to show every side in the same, unfaltering light. Believe me, anybody that watches this series and remains pro war is a psycopath. To see how millions of people lost everything, whole cities razed and destroyed, and the rise of modern mechanized warfare, which we mimic with great pride, is a real eye opener.

Watching the inexorable creep of the Bush administration into the realm of Gevernment control, and now seeing the same continuity of government, regardles of the recent election, it almost feels like this time, the powers that drove Hitler and his ideals to power, are willing to be more careful, and take their time in ultimately trying it again.

ANother thing is that people tried to pin the responsibility on a single man -- Hitler, but the reality is that he only exploited the current social conditions to his advantage, and I doubt it was all his doing, just like I wouldn't imagine Bush to be able to do it. There needs to be support form Corporations, and thats what we see now, and what we saw back in Hitlers day.

People must not forget to watch for patterns recurring from the past. But they are, and it's getting more scary.

Remember when that was the “BIG” thing - ANY republican has a flag pin today (That was the proof that Obama was NOT an American)

10. A Job For The Secret Service
Do these people know they are being seen and heard by everyone? Do they care? If the Secret Service plucked a few out of the crowd
maybe they would stop this crap before someone gets hurt. I still say this started at the Palin rallies and nothing was done about
it so the threats continue. The proper authorities should take a look and see what we see. Wishful thinking I guess.

14. Obsession with the "Tree of Liberty" metaphor
At 0:31 the crack-pot with the white beard shouts about Jefferson's tree of tree of liberty metaphor and then assures his opponents, "It's comin', baby!"

And the guy with the gun held a "tree of liberty" sign too. Combined with the firearm, that sent a chilling message: they want violence. They want to kill. It's the only way they can get the rest of us to pay them any mind.

And wasn't Timothy McVeigh wearing a shirt with the tree of liberty bit on it when they arrested him?

18. Crossing the line to advocate violence is NOT protected under
the First Amendment.

These people should be arrested, booked, tried and sentenced to do hard time; then sent out on 5 years probation having to work with underprivileged families that have no health care 40 hours a week.

This "Free Speech" notion, (caveat: I support the First Amendment), that calls for violence are somehow protected, is insane. No court in the land supports violence as "Free Speech", nor would the call for violence be tolerated. The first few that are arrested and booked will put an almost immediate end to this type of behavior. These people are cowards of the lowest order, ignorant cowards that cannot think for themselves, or differentiate between discourse and hate mongering.
They are filled with the fear the RW is splattering on the walls...all of it based on disinformation and overt lies. Fear is born of ignorance, it grows each day, nurtured by the bile that others throw out as "truth".

As Oliver Wendell Holmes so succinctly wrote...Crying 'Fire' in a crowded theater is not Free Speech.

20. Actually ....
you should read Brandenburg v. Ohio, 395 U.S. 444 (1969), which is the current limits on free speech as delineated by the supreme court. The test has three parts intent, imminence, and likelihood. Per the OP i see intent and maybe likelihood but no imminence. Thus protected free speech under current law.

22. I'm not so sure about the possibility of imminence...
Edited on Tue Aug-11-09 09:45 PM by rasputin1952
each case would be taken on it's merits. It would have to go through the system, and would depend on several factors. If the USSC decided to hear it, (if it went that far), the previous ruling could be overturned.

One of those, "what if" scenarios, but it would have to be drawn through the courts.

23. Your original post said that advocating violence was not
free speech and I was pointing out that actually it often is protected speech. You obviously know about Brandenburg's tests and we seem to disagree on the imminence prong. That's cool - thats what appellate courts are for. My post was for comments I see way to often here on DU that are ignorant on the settled law and/or openly hostile to civil rights - at least the civil rights of those the disagree with.

27. I'm no Legal Eagle...
and often, I think laws, and interpretations of laws, border on the insane but unless said laws are rescinded or overridden, that's the way it goes in this nation.

Recent passing of "Hate Crime" laws have opened a new facet to the argument, as well as the "Terroristic Threat" option that popped up through the "Patriot Act", (something I find despicable and should be rescinded in it's entirety). If citizens are being charged with "terroristic threats" for saying, "I'll kick your ass!"; it seems to me, advocating putting bullets in heads would easily pass the smell test for a "terroistic threat". Once challenged in court, the whole thing could eventually wind it's way to the USSC and, if heard, could lead to a serious change in how the courts would view such things.

Of course, something would have to happen to trigger the Appeals process, but it is not unheard of. I think the ACLU and Southern Poverty Law Center are just waiting to pounce on something to take to the USSC...we shall see what the future hold...:hi:

29. Good point on the patriot (sic) act provision - I didn't think of that
but I stand by my opinion. The courts (so far and I hope in the future) are loathe to but restrictions on political speech which this was in my opinion. The "I'll kick your ass!" threats would be illegal if the person was in the area of the speaker. There is an identified target and presumably the three prongs of Brandenburg would/could be met. i also agree that laws an interpretation of same are often insane. But we have to have some system and I like ours over most others in the world. Thanks for the dialog. This is what I love about DU!

30. And I thank you for the dialog...
I have learned a lot from the insight and wisdom of members. We have a very diverse membership, lawyers, doctors, nurses, paralegals, architects, chemists and even at least one astrophysicist that I know of. For all of that however, I learn the most from the day to day members that bring in their life experiences, knowledge and attained wisdom. It would be difficult for me to estimate the # of times I've had my opinion swayed or changed my mind on an issue because someone gave me a different perspective I could relate to.

DU is a fantastic place...:hi:
