8. I am beginning to think our approach is a mistake

I work for an agency that deals with a lot of 'regular' people. They don't speak well. They dress oddly. Half the time they smell.

They are average.

We help them and try to be fair and kind, even whey they are not.

That being said, I believe it is a mistake to mock these protestors. It has gone viral and people are, rightly or wrongly, VERY pissed. My wife owns a business that operates in a rural area. Sometimes people she refers to as 'time-wasters' showup and just want to chat. For a while, we got freshly unemployed people who didn't have anything better to do with their time and were still in shock about their loss. They wanted to vent.

Now, we get people who are REALLY pissed off. Seriously. These are middle / lower middle class people and some of them hint at (a few state directly) that they are ready to take up arms.

I am only there on the weekends, and the few instances I had the opportunity to ask these people quesions, they get red in the face and are ready to slug it out right there.

This anger, manufactured or not, is very real. I have never see it like this before.

EDITED: If you want to see how to handle angry voters, check out Gene Green's town hall meeting. He handles them, as best could be expected. He was outnumbered. But by using a small, up-close and personal venue, he kept it from getting out of control.

Most of all.... he showed them respect. He didn't smile snidly when they attacked him personally. He didn't lecture them.

His approach is a model that works.

I have lurked here for some time and finally got a login only to try to change this approach. Mocking will only work when you are targeting a small minority (it's not nice them either).

If someone is wrong, attack their ideas or assumptions.

Otherwise it is an "ad hominem" attack, or "to the man".

When you attack 'regular people' for who they are, you threaten everyone else who identifies with that person for whatever reason.

This is what gave McCain / Palin the boost at the end of the election. Some of the attacks against Palin were so over the top and mean... it created support where none existed.

First off, losing an election is not tyranny. Second off, if you're among those who strongly believe health care should be kept between a doctor and a patient, shouldn't you be fighting the insurance companies then? Because they're the ones who call the shots. And finally, the reason why nobody is listening to republicans right now is because you can't even have a rational debate with them in the first place. At first I was mocking her for it, because there are plenty of people of all stripes on YT that edit comments that refute her arguments. But she ended up posting my comment, which was hardly flattering to her opinion. But on further review, I have to assume she's doing it because she's getting spammed with troll comments attacking her personally. If you think DU can be a zoo, you haven't seen comment sections on videos. Females are especially prone to trolls on YT. I really don't blame her.
