I haven't heard anything like this from any other source. What I wonder is - what possible motive would this "military source" have for leaking that the guy's a deserter to FAUX "news" when the military's official position is that he's a POW whom they're trying to rescue? I just can't see how it would be any benefit to the military to put that out there. The guy even said they don't really know what happened -- if they knew he was a deserter, they would know. He's pulling it out of his ass.

And O'Reilly couldn't wait to get the guy on his show so he could agree with him.

10. That's a good point - why is the army so certain that he's deserted?

All the army knows is that he went missing - no contact, no word of what happened to him.

For all we know, he was captured within seconds of the last time anyone saw him.

And even if he DID desert, why the HELL would he desert in the middle of enemy territory?. It makes no sense.

I'd like to hear from someone else first. I'd feel like an idiot saying "we don't know how it happened, too early to tell, don't want to jump to conclusions, but I will say the guy's a deserter and should be killed". 6. I'm sick unto death of the retired Lt. Col Peters

Listening to him on this tape, one would assume that he has been in combat. However his biography on Wikipedia suggests that he spent his time in Germany as a Soviet specialist and then later in War College assignments. Apropos of that, doesn't it strike you as somewhat odd that such a blazing "up and comer retired out at the relatively low rank of Lt. Col? He was on the fast track for field grade. My bet is that something happened - probably his superiors decided that he was a flake so the "move up or move out" got him.

17. Drug/alcohol abuse and addiction

is a big problem among members of the armed services particularly in front line areas. It's a given that this causes a lot of bizarre behavior by folks back home so why couldn't this be a reason. The individual in question could just as likely have been stoned or drunk and wandered off. I don't recall this being brought up as a possibility but it has at least as much credence as any other theory I've heard.
