9. Obama said he has no clear evidence THIS case was racial profiling. He also said:
Edited on Thu Jul-23-09 09:49 PM by RBInMaine
He also said that from what he knows the cop is a good guy. (This cop has a good record, actually teaches racial profiling at the academy, and tried to save Reggie Lewis's life. ZERO evidence he's a rogue cop which requires a pattern of such, nor that this was racially motivated. He is also a youth sports coach. The race card will not stick to this officer.) Obama said "words were EXCHANGED," (which means it mutually escalated) and a poor arrest decision was made when "cooler heads should have prevailed" and that it seemed like the cop went too far to arrest the guy at his own residence after he'd shown ID and when he wasn't really causing a MAJOR disturbance. **Obama is explaining it now the way he should have last evening and should NOT have used the word "stupidly." PERIOD. President Don't Do That ! That only inflamed this whole thing even more and caused a MAJOR distraction when he has so much else to worry about.

Here's what happened: pissing contest = ego match = frustrated cop = poor arrest decision. I give you that even though Gates was somewhat belligerent, cops are supposed to be able to handle that, ID had been provided, and the cop didn't need to arrest this guy. Not at all. Bad call. However, ZERO evidence that the cop had a racial motive. We need to be FAIR here. That is what LIBERALS do. Cops are citizens too and have a very, very tough job. As much emotion as some may feel about this, there is no logical or compelling evidence of racism here. Bad police arrest decision, sure. I completely agree. But not racism.

13. Sounds reasonable on both sides

I definitely think his statement today was what he should have used yesterday - had he the chance to plan it out. It was not a typical George Bush 'I stand by every word' statement that Bush would have given - but did concede the word 'stupidly' by not repeating it again.

3. I never apologize for anything I say
even when I am wrong.

That only emboldens the enemy.

4. "Stupid" is as straight forward as you can be to explain the situation and the cops actions.

5. racists can't stand he articulate it so nicely. I agree with the stupidly part after hearing it for
a day now.

Their actions were dumb, just like the hothead cop who arrested the ambulance driver when the driver had a PATIENT in the back - he still didn't care about the patient and instead cared only about his pride - the ol' geezer professor probably rattled off some sarcastic or even prolific angry statements about how ridiculous it was that he was being asked for ID in his own home, and the cop got pissed that the guy was right.

10. police will arrest you if they don't like your attitude
it is an abuse of authority, and if it's your word against a cop's word, guess who the judge will believe

12. Don't back down Pres!
Legitimate criticism of abusive cops is necessary!

Yes, there are lots of great, public-service oriented police officers out there, but the arresting officer in the Gates case appears to be a racist arrogant schmuck.

We don't need to appease racist arrogant schmucks.

Thanks Obama :patriot: :kick:
