Tim Russert interviewed Helen Thomas yesterday discussing her book 'Watchdogs of Democracy', and they discuss some candid quotes from Helen that have been repeated in the media, including 'If Cheney becomes President I'll kill myself.'

1. Helen is a National Treasure.
Even Re-pig Tim seemed to be unable to do anything but have a warm interview with her.

Thank you Helen!

3. This kind of stuff always happens
When you're THAT famous, people always look for something to grab a headline of their own.
Helen is a personal friend, and I am ALWAYS careful about repeating things said when we
meet up for just this reason. It just isn't fair to use every side off-the-cuff remark they
in private, and I don't.

As for if she really feels that way, well, I'll let her speak for herself on that score. Listen
to the interview :-)

7. Here's a consolation prize
About 2 and a half weeks ago at my daughter's college graduation in Washington:

8. Wow!
What a great shot!

What a great Lady!

And I bet it was a great day. You must be very proud. My oldest is in his 2nd year. My daughter follows after one more year of High School and then my youngest boy has 4 years of High School coming.

9. It sounds like you have your hands full!
And if you don't, you will.

My daughter (the one in the pic) has been accepted at
Pace Law School, which means she will get to meet up
with RFK, Jr. and maybe take a class or two with him.

When she graduates from Law School, Helen will be 90!!

Still, if she has half the energy and drive she still
has now, we will be hearing from Helen for many years
to come. She and my dad were past presidents of the
Gridiron Club, so they knew each other since the 1960s.
Now, she is one of the last of a great generation of
journalists--beholden to no one, and willing to "speak
out against the madness," as CS&N put it. Not in anger,
but all the more forcefully because of that. Just the
courage to look evil and wrongdoing in the face and say
so.

I don't know what's going on in Journalism Schools across
the USA these days, but whatever it is, it ain't working,
What becomes of us when the likes of Helen are no longer
writing and posing "uncomfortable" questions? Woe is the
land whose journalists are solely of the caliber of "Jeff
Gannon," Glen Beck or David Brooks.

27. Brooks has a degree in history from UChicago, Beck never went to college (drugs and alcohol +radio)
The problem isn't with the journalists so much as its with the corporate masters. Journalism schools haven't really changed to my knowledge. The problem in this country is not with the youth.

18. Helen spoke last December at an ACLU benefit here and I bought her a dozen roses...
my girlfriend produced the event so I was able to give them to Helen upon her arrival. It was a very intimate and lovely affair! My love for Helen pales when compared to her love for this country and it's constitution... but a dozen roses seemed the least i could do!

Please send her love from Dominic! :loveya:

19. I'll remember that!
I won't be back in DC again until August, but I'll make a note of it,
or at least bring it up when I next talk to her (we usually talk about
once a month).

Thanks after-the-fact for the roses. Helen knows she is appreciated,
but she also gets nonstop shit from the bad guys, and it's always
nice to hear the positive, even for one as battle-tested as she is.

17. She has always had class
Russert should be ashamed of himself with some of the questions he asked.
Other questions were some we would have asked her ourselves.

I was lucky enough to meet her back in the 90's, she was walking down the street in DC and my wife recognized her and wanted our daughter to meet her. It goes in the column of one of our more interesting Washington DC experiences.

even deserve the opportunity of asking Helen one damn question.

15. Tim Russert is a lying weasel.
Edited on Mon Jun-11-07 12:25 AM by ArbustoBuster
In that clip, Russert said that "you know everything is on the record" as if it was some kind of acknowledged standard that everyone - including himself - follows.

However, Russert is extremely well known for keeping things off the record. It was even in his trial testimony: http://www.courant.com/news/local/hc-colin0311.artmar11,0,1517703.column That article also explains what "off the record" means in a reportorial environment.

And if I may add: Helen Thomas is worth a million of Russert. She's one of the best.

16. If Cheney becomes President, HE'LL kill Thomas!
He isn't about to allow her the privelege of a quick, relatively painless death. He isn't even going to send her to Gitmo. He'll make her swim there wearing two hundred pounds of chains.

She's the best! I wish Russert had asked her about her appearance in the Stephen Colbert video at the Press Corp. Dinner. It was hilarious!
