Does anyone know what they're shouting? Sounds like something ending with "dictator".

4. It sounds worse than it is--it's very common to do the "Death to" thing over there.
It was Morg bar Amrika, Morg bar Shah, Morg bar (poor old Jimmy) Carter back in 79!!!

The young kids speak and write English really well these days, much better than thirty years ago--back in the day you'd see "Dad for Karter" written on the walls (that wasn't a political endorsement, either).

6. Do you understand what they're saying in this one?
It might help to work out the context of what's going on...

10. At the verry beginning, I hear a guy yelling death to the baseeji
(morg bar baseeji), which would suggest that the protesters are surrounding a militia office. I am very rusty, I didn't rewatch the whole thing, because the scene at the end distresses me terribly. That is so much blood.

5. Did Amadinejad really win?
Before we get carried away by the repetition of the
conventional wisdom being peddled in the Western Press which
may be fueled more by wishful thinking than reality, perhaps
we should also consider that Ahmadinejad´s polls were even
higher than his margin of victory.

“An American-originated opinion poll published in the
Washington Post has suggested that Mr Ahmadinejad's
surprisingly large margin of victory might in fact reflect the
genuine will of the Iranian people.
The poll, conducted three weeks before the vote, indicated
that Mr Ahmadinejad would win by a ratio of 2:1, slightly
higher than the actual declared outcome.”

7. If I recall, that poll was taken about 3 weeks before the election.
Also, with over 50% registering variants of "none of the above", it was very far from conclusive. AND (if I recall), the methodology didn't give the respondent much assurance of protection from government reprisal. That would skew such a poll very strongly AGAINST an anti-incumbent vote.

9. Please explain several things if you believe that.
Edited on Wed Jun-17-09 05:24 AM by 4lbs
1.) How they could count 40 million hand-written ballots in just a few hours.

Iran doesn't use fill-in-the-bubble-with-a-pencil scantron forms or punch card butterfly ballots. A voter there must WRITE the name of the candidate they want, along with a candidate number, and another code number.

It takes each state in the U.S. about 48 hours to count and verify all their votes in a general election. Yet, Iran announced preliminary results just 10 minutes after polls closed, and full results about 4 hours later. What advanced technology does Iran possess that allows them to count hand-written ballots 1200% faster than experienced U.S. election officials who are often just passing electronic scantron forms or punch cards read by optical computer here in America? So, somehow in Iran a human can count votes much faster than a computer?

2.) How the incumbent completely demolished each of his challengers in their hometowns.

He beat them 90% to 10% on average in their home areas! That would be like Obama beating McCain 90% to 10% in Arizona! Or McCain beating Obama by that margin in Illinois! Did Bush beat Kerry 90% to 10% in Massachussetts in 2004? Did Bush beat Gore 90% to 10% in Tennessee in 2000? Nope.

Even when Reagan demolished Mondale, electorally in 1984, Mondale still won his home state of Minnesota.
