'Nervous' Letterman Brushes Off Protesters

Host Jokes About Flap With Palin, Unveils 'Top Ten Things Overheard At Fire Dave Rally'

NEW YORK (CBS)

While angry protesters called for CBS to fire longtime Late Show host David Letterman after his flap with Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the comic brushed off the hate with a slew of jokes and a Top Ten List aimed at those calling for his head.

In fact, the very first thing he said to his audience was a rib for those rallying:

"Now when I call your name, please come forward and pick up your apology. I wanna get through this as quickly as possibly so you folks can get to the 'Fire Dave Rally.' It's nice that people hate me who are no longer just part of my immediate family. My son, he's telling everybody at school that his father is Conan!"

- snip -

At one point it appeared as though Letterman might actually show live video of the protesters marching outside the Ed Sullivan Theater.

"The big news here today in New York City is the 'Fire Dave Protest Rally' and it's going on right now. You folks are missing the real show, I'm sorry. Do we have a camera out there? Let's check in on the Fire Dave Rally, it's at 54th and Broadway!" he said. Directors then cut to footage of various looting rallies from around the world, with a graphic reading "Midtown Paralyzed By Anti-Letterman Protest" underneath.

In actuality, only about 50 protesters gathered outside the building, holding numerous signs including, "Fire The Pervert David Letterman."

2. FIRE OREILLY!!!!!
Letterman tells a lame joke that gets misunderstood and used as a political stunt,

Bill O'reilly insights violence that leads to a number of murders,

and these Right Wing pieces of human waste call for letterman to get fired.

Edited on Wed Jun-17-09 01:41 AM by Tx4obama
HuffPo has a video from the Fire Dave Rally

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/06/16/letterman-protest-draws-m_n_216566.html

But I can't get it to play at the HP site or at the NY Mag site.

I wish someone that knew how to would upload it to YouTube and post it here on DU.

Here's the original:

12. I WATCHED THE VIDEO.
This is a perfect example of why we must reinstate THE
FAIRNESS DOCTRINE. These "protesters" were terribly
ignorant and hateful people. They would not know the truth if
it bit them on the ass. One young fellow said, in response to
a question about either Leno or Letterman; "I only watch
FOX NEWS CHANNEL." I'd bet he doesn't know that "FOX
NEWS CHANNEL" (lol, omg, what an oxymoron), won a suit in
the Florida Supreme Court that says, "News programs have
no responsibility to tell the truth." How can anyone
watch a "news" program that admitted it was not
honest and got a verdict saying it doesn't have to tell the
truth? This shit could never happen under THE FAIRNESS
DOCTRINE. These ignorant, loud mouthed, wealth sponsored
terrorists, at least have the BALLS to publicly demonstrate.
If normal, better informed citizens would ALL(millions) take
to the streets and demand universal health care or publicly
financed elections, these are things that the MAJORITY of
Americans want, then we would see some real change in the
status quo.

16. beyond ignorant
saw one sign the other day at that stupid rally that said along the lines. Rape is not a joke.

Funny. 1. sarah palin makes rape victims pay for the rape kits and two... I was reading somewhere the other day about someone palin plans to hire.. jokingly saying (like hell) If you can't rape your wife, who can you rape?

Letterman didn't even mention the word. Are they suggesting Levi raped Bristol???

29. They're pretending that Dave said that A-rod raped Willow.
Which, of course, he didn't-- not even close. But they're so outraged at what they pretend he said, that he apologized, twice.

I know I'm tuning in to see how he handles all this! Good for Dave.

And I'm in the camp of the "He shouldn't have apologized because he's a comedian" folks. It's his JOB (a job that goes back centuries -- a job that Shakespeare called Fool) to provoke, to challenge, to offend, to satirize, to deflate the hypocrites, to afflict the comfortable. It's his JOB, and he should NOT have to apologize for ANY joke. My god ... when I think of the level of offensiveness of most of the comedians I listen to, Dave's joke was like a picnic in the freakin' park.

If he were a news anchor or senator, then he'd have to apologize. But he made a joke about two public figures (Sarah Palin and People-magazine-cover-girl and Abstinence Media Tour Queen Bristol Palin). He did not make a joke about a "candidate's daughter" -- which Willow still is. Bristol has moved to public figure, and her mom's cynical use of the kids as props has made the Guv totally fair game for this kind of ridicule.

26. Was going to say "Welcome to DU" but see you've been on board for awhile.
Hailey, huh? Is that where Bruce Willis once owned a bar in town? Love me some Hailey! Stopped there a few years ago with a friend for lunch at a 50's style diner on a corner. Fun place, great memories, beautiful area. Hope I'm remembering that right! My friend was a Dem, at the time a rarity in gorgeous Idaho!

Anyway, glad to have you on DU!

Letterman's making fun of it, obviously, but the pathetic fact is that by now everyone's heard about the "Fire Lettermans" and the "Tea Baggers." And yet when some DUers and a couple hundred thousand of our friends descended on San Francisco in February of 2003, the national coverage was sparse to almost non-existent.

28. Letterman's a winner.
Sarah doesn't get it. Americans like nothing better in its leaders than self-deprecating humor. Heck, that was Reagan's only qualification for office-- that he could not only take a joke, but deliver one at his own expense.

I am not sure that Letterman is right about this one. His remarks were offensive. Nobody's kid should be attacked to make a political joke. He can't be surprised people are upset about it and he'd be better off just dropping the whole thing. Seems just adolescent to me to keep trading insult for insult.
