1. Another example of the fact that...
Just because another nation's leader hates Dub as much as do we, it doesn't mean he's our friend; nor, more importantly, does it mean he's a friend of his own people. Whatever good he's done for the poorest citizens there, you don't help the lowest-income level of the population by dragging the rest of the nation down the tubes. And that's just what Chavez is doing with what was one of Latin America's most stable democracies. I fail to see much difference in sanity between Chavez and Iran's president, personally. Funny thing, though--you don't see all the Neo-Con chickenhawks rattling their plastic swords anxious to invade Venezuela or launch an air strike on Caracas. And Chavez does have oil...I guess you have to be a dictator with oil in the Middle East to get their attention...:eyes:

I really do think Venezuela would be far better off with him out of power. But that's something their citizens should be allowed to decide--something Chavez seems to be afraid to do; that is, allow a fair and free election. In that way, and in seeking to consolidate dictatorial powers in his presidency, he really isn't much different than Dub, is he?

B-)

5. Hugo Chavez is not quite the despot he is portrayed as.
If you want to find out what is really going on in Venezuela and why Chavez refused to renew the license of RCTV, an article you should read is "Venezuela and the Media: Fact and Fiction" from the Center for Economic and Policy Research. It was published on CommonDreams.org today and gives much more background about licensing of the media in Venezuela and the actions of this station in particular. If RCTV had really been trying to get the truth out about what was happening in Venezuela, then Chavez's actions would have been pure censorship. But they manipulated film, distorted facts and purposefully mislead the public into thinking that Chavez supporters were shooting protesters and worse. Our own involvement in that short-lived coup was likewise self-serving. It annoys me that our media is so lazy they simply cannot research anything anymore.

I find it interesting that we demonize a democratically elected leader of a Catholic country, even though the elections there have been monitored by international groups to assure integrity. I wish I could make the same claim about elections in this country. Chavez is by no means perfect, but he has improved the lives of poor Venezuelans in general. He has loaned millions to other South American countries without the strings attached that come with funds from the World Bank and others. Like it or not, he is providing leadership in South America that shows other countries they can survive without bowing to Washington. We don't trust him because he is a Socialist - to most Americans, that is the same as a Communist.

6. "Free and fair election?"
He just recently survived a recall attempt, something like 60-40.

2. Seeing him in a military uniform...
Kinda freaks me out. He had a much better image before he became all-powerful within his country and now it seems to be going to his head.

3. Hard to know the facts....
This is a tough story to follow. I know what I want to believe, but I also know there is a whirlwind of crap flying in the airwaves on this side of the Caribbean.

It was my understanding that he WAS elected by the people. It was also my understanding that there was an attempt to overthrow him. I have heard he is spending a lot of his attention on helping the poor of the country, and very probably at the expense of the wealthy aristocracy. There in lies the biggest of problems for the troubles in Venezuela.

He is taking the control away from he wealthy elite and they don't like that at all. The common people seem to support him. I'm weary of the interference of the US in their affairs, and I'm certain that the CIA has a hand in a lot of the trouble that is unfolding.

Chavez acts crazy at times, and he's not the typical, responsible and polite leader you would want for a neighbor.

He LOVES humiliating this pile of shit preznit we have, and he is one of only a small handful of world leaders willing and able to get away with that. Maybe it's not the right way to act, diplomatically, but then again, our little cowboy is no better to my way of thinking.

I would need to do a LOT of research to really find out what is happening and why it is happening. I'd probably rely on PBS and other reliable sources of information that could offer a balanced view/s. I know the propaganda network is making him out to be what he refers to the chimp as....the diablo (devil). I don't think it's quite that simple.

I wish him well, and I hope we keep our damned noses out of it.

4. Anybody else see any similarities to China, circa 1950?
Edited on Fri Jun-01-07 01:57 PM by saddlesore
I am not very current on what is really happening in Venezuela, however, the video footage is very reminiscent of China during the change...

Peace.
