Edited on Wed May-13-09 01:24 PM by theoldman
Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't. Unfortunately we have no credible records.

4. Repent or die was a very successful strategy during the Inquisition
It was guaranteed to bring life changing results. Or death. A win win.

Lindsey, let me ask, who would Jesus torture?

Lindsey Graham: Cheney Put People in Gitmo Who Weren’t Military Threat

http://emptywheel.firedoglake.com/

Lindsey Graham spent much of the torture hearing trying to find a narrow ground from which he could condemn torture, yet prevent anyone from being held accountable for torture. But in an effort to admit past problems at Gitmo, he named names. One name--that of Dick Cheney.

My goal is to have a process, Mr. Zelikow, that would allow us as a nation to hold our head up high and say, "no one is in jail at Guantanamo Bay because Dick Cheney said so. The only people that are in jail at Guantanamo Bay are there because the evidence presented to an independent judiciary by our military passed muster with the judicial system--they're there because they're a military threat." And that when we try these people, they're tried not because we hate them, but because of what they did.

I guess the presidential determination that someone is an enemy combatant is another of those presidential-level decisions that Dick Cheney made in lieu of the actual President.

This prick makes me ashamed of the whole Congress. To think someone that goofy dumb could be a US Senator belittles the office.

What are the people in his state thinking? Is this dick head a "good representative" of their state? If so, they should be ashamed.

22. Recently in Ghana, several hundred people accused of being witches
were tortured. Amazingly, every single one of them confessed to being a witch. See? Torture works....at getting people to confess to anything.

14. Bizarre logic here. Anything that's been around for 500 years works? Okay, let's test...
...this theory. Everyone go back to 1509. Now think of things that are still around from those days. Philosophies, practices, devices. Do they still work? Oh, wait. I see a problem. What are we defining as "work?" I mean, child prostitution was certainly around back then and it's still around now. How do we decide if it "works"?

 I are so confused.

slavery works. Been around since recorded history.

Don't outlaw the classics, folks! If we continue to make slavery illegal, the terrorists win!

Do these idiots realize all of this is on the record here? Let's see here -'uh, boiling people alive in oil has been around for hundreds of years - therefore it works as a means of interrogation'. His lack of basic high school education is showing here.

21. Our Founding Fathers were quite aware of the history of the Star
Chamber in England. That is why they prohibited cruel and unusual punishment and guaranteed the rights of prisoners in our Constitution.

If torture had worked, we would have lost the American Revolution. Subjugation of women was around for far longer than 500 years. It may have worked, but for what purpose? It certainly did not work for women.

Slavery was around in Roman times. That did not make it right.

The reason that torture has been around for 500 years is because there are a lot of sadists and always have been. Murder has been around a lot longer than 500 years. Doesn't make it right or prove that it "works."

23. Yes, Torture DOES work!...
....at getting FALSE confessions. You want someone to admit something that is NOT true, torture will work well. That's why it's used over and over for hundreds of thousands of years....quick coercion.

Getting useful accurate realistic info...not so much. But getting someone to say what you want them to whether true or not....works like a charm!

Is that what Dick means when he says it worked?

34. LINDSAY is right. Torture works wonderfully IF
you are trying to establish a fictitious link between Iraq and 9/11, fake WMDs, or phantom Mushroom Clouds. Everything we always knew is slowly almost mysteriously coming out. Is it just my gut or do other feel this administration is surreptitiously leaking enough facts to convict these bums while appearing to be all "Forward Looking" and "Bi-partisany"? NAW, they would never stoop to such low down dirty tactics. I feel so sorry for old Cheney squirming out there on the talk shows, telling everyone how good torture works, while the FBI and CIA release documents showing just the opposite. If I wasn't such a nice person I might be enjoying myself and thinking, "Isn't revenge sweet?"
