An American ship captain was freed unharmed Sunday in a swift firefight that killed three of the four Somali pirates who had been holding him for days in a lifeboat off the coast of Africa, the ship's owner said. A senior U.S. intelligence official said a pirate who had been involved in negotiations to free Capt. Richard Phillips but who was not on the lifeboat was in custody.

Phillips, 53, of Underhill, Vermont, was safely transported to a Navy warship nearby.

Richard Phillips, captain of the U.S.-flagged cargo ship Maersk Alabama, right, after his rescue, with Cmdr. Frank Castellano, commanding officer of USS Bainbridge.

Can you actually believe it on the politically conservative (but anti-Christian) blog Little Green Footballs they are actually heaping praise on Obama for authorizing action. I was beginning to fear Obama might get the Jimmy Carter award for this whole affair. Obama presidency 100 points Pirates zero (does high five).

11. treating the symptoms, not the disease
Piracy won't go away until the serious problems in Somalia are addressed, including young men signing up to be pirates so they can get out of poverty. Sending in the troops to rescue the captain and killing a few pirates is very Clint Eastwood and a great story for Easter Sunday, but nothing has changed.

12. Sorry, I have to disagree.
Don't you think this is going to make the pirates think twice about taking American ships, crew, and cargo? It sucks people had to die, but we didn't start this. We only ended it.

As far as the Somali pirate situation, I agree more should be done to stabilize the region. But that is far beyond the scope of the mission these men were given, and executed flawlessly I might add.

If I were a pirate thinking about taking an American ship and her crew today, I would be thinking about having to play with an American destroyer, as well as some of the best trained special forces in the world. That makes a difference to OUR situation. That is fine imo, for now.
