It's the American public that has to come to the conclusion that something has to change. Once the American public has deceided enough is enough then the next step is to push Congress. The President will act but not in a way that will damage any chance of getting true reform.

I love it how it's Obama's total responsibility after 3 months and the previous administration opened the doors wide open and didn't address any issues. The * admin cut funding for police, for states to address mental issues etc. These crimes happened the previous 8 years....this didn't just start...

11. If it came from the NRA it's almost surely a lie

50 years ago when I was 17 my uncle gave us kids NRA memberships. For many years I enjoyed the magazine and the services it provided. But about 25 years ago it started catering to the frightened and paranoid among us. So I canceled. It's only gotten worse since then.

1. The government doesn't give a shit about your guns or my guns or anybody elses guns.

2. If they ever decide they DO give a shit about them you ain't gonna do squat about it. They'll take them if they want (ever from your cold dead hand if it comes to that). They have more guns than you.

So it's really pretty silly to worry about it. Just enjoy using the guns.

Barack Obama has stated unequivocally that law-abiding Americans have the right to purchase, own, transport, and use guns responsibly, including for the purpose of protecting their families. So this line of attack is particularly scurrilous, as it uses terrifying imagery and outright lies to attack Obama.

The TV ad dubiously cites a vote Obama took in the Illinois State Senate in 2004, in which he voted against a measure that created a loophole for people caught in violation of local gun registration laws—a bill that had nothing to do with whether or not a person was legally justified in using a firearm to protect their home or family. Obama voted to maintain a small provision of state law that ensured that those who fail to properly register dangerous weapons face the usual legal penalty. It is a piece of state legislative minutia that is almost too obscure and inconsequential to mention, let alone distort.

But the truth is rarely a hindrance to desperate groups dealing in smears and scare tactics.
The NRA’s lies are transparent, so much so that North Carolina’s Citizen-Times gave the ads an “F” for twisting Obama’s position “almost out of whole cloth,” and many other news outlets have wholeheartedly condemned the ad campaign as well.

Please help make sure that everyone you know understands the truth about Barack Obama’s positions, and the lies they’re being sold by the NRA.

... here on the good old DU discussion forums, would not see that the USA has a problem with gun-related violence that needs to be addressed by legislators.

The intentional homicide rate in the USA (per 100,000 in habitants) is around 4 or 5 times higher that in western European countries where gun ownership is more tightly restricted*.

So it means that an average of more than 100 people every month are paying the price for your "freedom to bear arms" with their lives.

I guess you think it's a price worth paying for the liberty that only guns can give you.

24. I Hope One Day

Most guns will be banned. Especially guns that are not used for hunting. (Uzzis etc) The right to bear arms was established for the people to be able to rise and overthrow a government if necessary. Today, the people of the US could never revolt against the government with arms. The goverment has tanks, bombs, fighter planes, and the people would not have a chance in hell. IMO
