I'm probably going to have to read his book. Not BUY the book mind you, but get it on loan from the Library and read it. He's calling for a "new enlightenment", one which is, in my opinion, long overdue.

Dobbs continues to handle unpopular subjects and once again gets kudos from myself for doing so. I wonder how long it will be before the American taliban declares a fatwah against him though? The charlatans of the religious right hate to be exposed to the light of day and I can't see them taking this in stride without some sort of retaliation.

6. I'm torn here

On the one hand, good for him for doing the book and I agree that a new Enlightenment is well overdue. However, he's putting forward an idea I see from a certain (admittedly small) group of athiests that not only do they not believe but no-one should believe. Yes, the fundies are nutcases (although, since most of them claim to have been something akin to serial killers before being "born again", I'd prefer it if they kept on believing) but most of us aren't fundies. Most of us do not want a world run on faith but nor do we want to see faith demonised. Most of us (outside the USA) accept that evolution is the most likely explanation for how we got here but we don't agree that precludes the existance of a deity.

Hitchens here seems to be giving in to the annoyingly widespread view that there is no-one in-between Pat Robertson and, say, Carl Sagan.
