Will Obama Honor His NAFTA Campaign Promise?

There are rising doubts as to whether or not Obama will honor his campaign promise to re-negotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement.

The economic team the President-Elect has appointed is really just a continuation of the Clinton-Bush trade agreements. Same old players.

Obama's economic advisors Larry Summers and Rahm Emanuel actively lobbied for NAFTA, along with Bill Richardson.

Richardson was a Congressional cheerleader for NAFTA.

1. The economy will never recover if he doesn't renegotiate just about every trade agreement. (nt)

2. No, I don't think he will
I watch Canadian news. I think the reassurances his team gave to the Canadian government during the primary actually occurred.

3. It was just campaign rhetoric. Just ask the Canadians!

4. If you are expecting Obama to oppose free trade agreements you will be disappointed.
He wants to make some changes but in general he is in favor of them. Just look at what he said about free trade during the campaign and you will see.

FWIW, free trade sucks but Obama has redeeming value for sure.

5. If Obama Doesn't He Will Send the Average American a Strong Message
and I'm not sure they will like it nor will they believe him ever again. Talk about political risk not only for him but for the whole Democratic Party... but hey, I'm "Far-Left" so what do I know.

6. Obama was just pandering to the union vote
Who heavily favored Clinton at the time.

I highly doubt Obama will renegotiate NAFTA, but he might renegotiate other trade agreements.
