This is absolutely brilliant. When was the last time you actually saw a map of Israel, its neighbors, the occupied territories, and had these conflicts put into a geographical/historical context? Never. Way to go, Rachel, even though the news is sad and demoralizing.

1. good job by Rachael but I did see one last night on Newshour,
with an accompanying lengthy discussion of the conflict. Just thought I'd make the comment. Gwen and Margaret each interviewed a top official from each side and asked very good questions.

5. Glad to hear Newshour is doing similar good work
this is the kind of information that American citizens need to try to start piecing together some sense out of that nonsense.

2. Nicely done
It is next to impossible to express a "nutshell" version of the current fighting what lead to it, but Rachel comes very close.

3. A biased, incomplete history lesson
More of the poor little Israel refrain . . . and no mention of the 500,000-1,000,000 Palestinian refugees or Israel's more recent human rights abuses or its unabated illegal settlement construction and international law violations.

Color me unimpressed.

4. I think the American media is more pro-Israel.
That's why I enjoyed seeing even treatment on Newshour and also on another PBS program called "World Vision". I think it's shameful for Israel to use the excuse, "well they started it", etc. Violence only begets more violence.

As I commented to my husband last night, this, too, is Bush's fault. We took a powder on the conflict rather than engaging as a broker of peace between them, and now we see the results.

6. I like Rachel but this is a biased review of history
There is no mention of malnourishment in over half of the 1.5 million inhabitants of the Gaza Strip, one sentence about the blockade (she calls it an embargo- I suppose it sounds better), and no mention of abuses from Israel or Egypt.

15. Agree with you.
I emailed Rachel and asked her to invite Juan Cole, proprietor of Informed Comment web site, onto her show to give a more balanced view of the Arab and Muslim viewpoint.

12. Another "stunningly superficial" understanding of history.
Israel's "right to exist" is the first clue that Rachel is either clueless, or lying.

First, there is NO country on Earth which has the "right to exist". The US has no such right, nor does the former USSR, nor Iraq, nor Canada. This is a term that has no legal meaning.
Further, this "right to exist" was actually explicitly agreed to by Arafat in a letter to Rabin in 1993. Here is a link: http://almashriq.hiof.no/israel/300/320/327/israel-plo_recognition.html

What is the next excuse?

Calling this a conflict is akin to calling the Holocaust a skirmish. Its a genocide, plain and simple.

Of course, this sort of shoddy reporting and opinion is the real purpose of the media, so have at it guys...

I hope PE Obama does something to improve the Palestinian plight when he is in office. I am not holding my breath though. Recently, 200-400 people were injured or killed in Gaza vs 2-3 in Israel. It is true one life lost is too many and this hardly seems balanced. I do not think all those killed in Gaza were "terrorists".

On a side note, it should go without saying I oppose the Iraq invasion and view both Cheney and Bush as war criminals. The number of lives lost so companies like Halliburton and KBR can profiteer is obscene.

Of course now our government and ruling class can steal more simply and directly with things like the financial market bailout in place.
