3. My stepdaughter and I still have bees buzzing around our
gardens, but we are both organic gardeners. Now I am going to be extra vigilant to know where my hybrid plants are coming from. I'm going to start concentrating on planting heirloom plants whenever I can find them. I really think the frankenfood has a lot to do with it. Maybe those of us with gardens and yards can try to offset the damage the corporate farmers are doing.

its usually areas that are organic and not sprayed at my yard is organic too and I have them but must admit they are small amount but now that you mention it they went for wild flowers and my antique roses and not touching the hybrids Dang good point

7. I Keep bees and this is scary stufff. Mites were bad enough when they came
on the scene a few decades ago. I haven't lost any hives due to the vacating problem, but late cold snaps--really cold &/or prolonged kill many hives these last few years. Severe winter in springtime may be something we have to look forward to from now on. Anyway, I lost several hives and it is heartbreaking to see them clustered around the queen, all dead either from cold or starvation. I don't want to know what it feels like to just find them gone.........

9. when we had our farm, we had hives.
I can see the picture of what you describe - the cluster around the queen - doing what the can to survive - heartbreaking indeed.

There are very few bees here in our garden in southern California. Usually there are hundreds all over my African sage bush. I deliberately let it go into thousands of blooms so the bees will have it - I don't prune it until after the initial bloom. There are a mere handful of bees this year.

10. makes sense to me...
...all genetics in nature developed over a very long time ( at least 7000 years ;) ) and how could anybody who messes with genes expect to know what (s)he's doing . Do they really understand the entire genetic code, what may side-affect what? What happens if I insert code of bacteria into code of a plant? One gets some ( desired ) effect but can anybody really know what else may happen?

I doubt it.

PS : amazing how perfectly that Chief Seattle quote fits here

11. The hubris of some people is beyond my comprehension.
Study genetics by all means, but outrunning our knowledge in the name of greed is going to end us sooner rather than later.
