Just what our labor unions need, a new theme song!
Since Reagan busted the air traffic controllers' union, unions have gotten a bum rap. It's time that we brought to light the fact that unions protect the workers. Unions are why we have a high standard of living in the US. Unions can, once again, become the backbone of labor in our country.

If we want to take a snapshot of what is wrong in this country, look no further than 1358 Abbott St., Detroit MI. My proud brothers and sisters, family and friends, have seen the wrong end of this country's policies for the past decade. While the nightly news for the past year has told stories of troubled times for working class Americans, I wonder where were these concerned newscasters the past seven years.

We have been forgotten here in Detroit, Southeast Michigan; cast aside to fend for ourselves. For nearly seven years, IBEW Local 58 has experienced an average of over 1000 laid off electricians out of a membership of roughly 5000. Our brothers and sisters have had to wait up to a year and a half for a chance at a job that may only last a few months, and yet you would be hard pressed to find an equally skilled or motivated worker anywhere else in the country.

In today's America we do not make the news. In today's America we experience foreclosures, bankruptcies, divorce, abandonment and suicides. In today’s America there is nobody there to catch you if you fall. We have experienced these troubled times longer than most in this country and if we as a country expect to turn things around, I suggest looking no further than 1358 Abbott St. to find a place to begin.
