(Oct, 2008) In a local news special investigation, Harris County (Houston) Tax Collector (and Voter Registrar) Paul Bettencourt (R-naturally) is claiming wide-spread "voter-fraud" to disenfranchise HUNDREDS (perhaps THOUSANDS) of newly registered voters that the investigation finds are mostly all eligible (and Democrat).

Typical Rovian weasel.

1. All these claims by republicans are BOGUS
They just invent them, or they find 1 example out of 200 million and call it "rampant".

4. I registered over 30...
new voters myself just before the October 4 deadline in another Texas county and have been wondering if any will be challenged or rejected by our thoroughly Republican county tax assessor. I am also an election judge and am stressed by the fear that voters will be disenfranchised on Election Day in my precinct and I won't have the time or energy to help them because of changes in interpretations of election worker laws that only came to light a couple of weeks ago. There are many ways to discourage and suppress votes. :eyes:

11. Not if you're not on the rolls.
See that's where the republicans game the system if they control the registrar's office. Their side wants to depress voter turnout so they use every way to skirt the system to purge more voters and to reject new ones. They know if voters turn out in huge numbers that Democrats win. So they play the "voter fraud hype" over and over and most of the time 99.9% it's just hot air.

Here's a related thread to part 1 of the story on the Texas forum in DU.

Note that the voter rolls in Harris only went up by 10,000 over the 2004 presidential election. And that's despite the fact that Bettencourt has admitted that about 97,000 new registrations were submitted this year. So that means he's purged about 87,000 people since 2004.

And the final kicker he says about 10,000 new registrations came in just a little too late after the deadline for registration on Monday Oct 6th. Too bad those people can't vote this election. I certainly don't think we should trust him on checking those cards. I want someone to review them and make sure those were postmarked Oct 7th and that he's not just playing voter suppression guy with those either.

:grr:

12. I didn't catch that before
I didn't catch that 87,000 voter discrepancy before. Interesting.
