10. This made me tear up as well.
The story of the soldier really brings home the unfair nature of the anti-Muslim sentiment that the Republican base has embraced.

I went to see "W." last night with my sister. Most people say that George W. Bush gets a sympathetic portrayal, but I left the theater feeling really bad for Colin Powell. He was the voice of reason in a chaotic environment--a soldier surrounded by those who choose not to serve. It was an unenviable position.

52. I always thought that Powell was a jewel in a cesspool-I never understood
why a man of such obvious integrity and honor was an integral part of the worst administration in history. Had he been a Democrat, he too would have made a terrific choice for our party.

57. Agreed
and a stinging indictment of the current version of the Republican Party and their politics of personal destruction. I am sending the YouTube link to everyone in my email address list with just that message, because the General (for all his faults and who among us has none?) has said it far better than I (or I think pretty much anyone else) can ever say.

12. No one could have done a better job....
Of laying out the case FOR Senator Obama while stating the failures of Sen. McCain to make his case in an HONORABLE, and HONEST way.

Of course we all know the immediate assessment will be: Powell is a traitor to his party - the party that gave him so much, and the reason for his betrayal is race.

I've new seen the Poweell press conference and he elaborates more and clears up any grey areas. I think the point was more in the larger picture that divisive rhetoric is unhealthy for a society and that point would of been clearer to left and right is all I am really saying.

16. That was no ordinary endorsement
Edited on Sun Oct-19-08 09:51 AM by Laxman
He spoke for over six minutes without interruption presenting a reasoned and logical argument supporting his endorsement. "why shouldn't a seven year old Muslim kid dream that he could grow up to be president someday?"

People who don't learn from their mistakes are idiots and people who don't make mistakes don't exist. This endorsement was a elegant summation of all that is wrong with the current Republican approach to politics and power in America today. Perhaps the fact that it is coming from a former insider in this misadministration can help the whole country turn a corner in our future course.

46. That is, precisely, an added point.
So are many other republicans being hoodwinked and sticking with it in the name of party, not country. Powell belongs to the republican party...their's. Maybe, in the end, in the secrecy of their voting booth they will be conscience-stricken and see the light-as a last chance. Hope never dies, all the way down to the last second.

27. An Albatross Hanging Around Senator McAniac's Neck
Rush and Sean will have a field day with this endorsement. Can't wait to hear Rush saying, "Isn't he the one that lied about the weapons of mass destruction?" and from Sean, "He was wrong then and he is wrong now!" McCain will mention his name at his rallies and the cries for "kill him" and "he is an Arab too" will again resonate from his crowd of avid "end days" supporters.

37. If Powell was the VP instead of Palin
I can say this now that it can't happen, (knock on wood). The only way McCain could have flipped the polls to 10 points in his favor would have been to have Palin graciously step down (for the good of her family and commitments to Alaska) and Colin Powell replace her. Imagine, the GOP would have their very own African American to tout, silencing all the racism critique. And one whose resume, however tainted looking to anti-war liberals, is far longer. I was biting my nails thinking that this may be Rove's big October surprise - Powell endorsing McCain, and then replacing Palin. The independents would have looked at this as a reassuring balance and a solidification of foreign policy depth for the White House. McCain would have cleaned up. All I can say is whew....

I really believe this is genuine and the endorsement he made is moving and heart felt. But you know if he had not appeared before the UN and made the case for attacking Iraq we might not be there now. Many people see his appearance there as crucial to getting the few supporters the US managed to get for Iraq.

51. Do you honestly believe that Powell knowlingly lied about Iraq? I have never felt so sorry for
anyone in my life! Why do you think he resigned?

He was USED and ABUSED by the Republican party--the same party "handlers" who put out the LIES in South Carolina back in 2000 that McCain had fathered a BLACK child out of WEDLOCK--outright LIES--and they KNEW that this was his adopted child! And what does McCain do? Hires the same MFs to run HIS campaign--lobbyists--looking out for number 1 and to HELL with the rest of us. That party doesn't care about Joe the Plumber or any other "common" American. They are corrupt to the core and will do ANYthing to hold on to power. THAT is what the Rethuglikkkan party has become. May they ALL rot in hell!

Powell waited for the right moment and the right man. NOW....Payback is HELL!
