That it has gone on this long really leaves it un-fixable. What the hell is McCain going to say to Dave? Or even Palin for that matter?

I predict there is no way anyone from the McCain campaign does Letterman. The damage is done, and the only real way to stop it is to go in front of all of those viewers and admit he lied and grovel for an apology? That is best case. Worst case is be contentious and have Dave develop a Lenny Bruce type obsession with taking you down. Arguably he already has.

Dave has negated millions of dollars in McCain advertising making him look like a fool, over and over, and McCain just let's it slide. Weak, to say the least. Great viewing as well. :)

It's a lose-lose deal for McCain. If he goes on, he'll lie and Dave will skewer him in person. If he doesn't go on, Dave will continue to skewer him in absentia as he does here.
