7. I have never understood the use of "Maverick" as a positive

campaign slogan. When I hear "maverick" I associate it with someone who is cocky, narcissistic, and dangerous, but popular for superficial reasons such as good looks or athletic ability. Maybe I hung out with too many geeks and nerds, but "maverick" makes me think of the buff, jerk, football captain who would trip you as you passed.

Where exactly is the appeal of being a maverick?

I had never heard the history of where "Maverick" came from before. In light of this history, I would love to see Ms. Maverick do a short commercial for Obama explaining some of the history of her progressive leaning family, and what it actually means to be a Maverick.

... their relationship to the system they're rebelling against.

I'm all for business mavericks, for instance, who rebel against the Wall Streets dictates of immense short-term profit over the environment, human rights, and even economic sanity.

But rebelling against systems that are designed to PROTECT civil rights, sustainability, and economic fairness is not "thinking for oneself". It's acting against the common good and the social compact.

Mavericks are, like everything else, dependent on context.

I think Mavericks are cattle that have been driven out of the herd. How can a Maverick reach across the aisle when he doesn't even have the support of his own party? The House Republicans told him to stick it, when he suspended his campaign to save the bailout. If elected he will have zero support from either party.
