Watch Sarah Palin Read Her Answers In Last Night’s Debate

For Sarah Palin, last night’s debate was an open-book exam. She spent much of the evening methodically reading and rehearsing answers from “carefully scripted talking points.” Palin’s notes were largely hidden from plain view, resting behind the lectern where she stood.

Because the cable and network television stations did not show a split screen of the debate, most viewers could not see that, during Joe Biden’s answers, Palin spent almost all her time looking down and studiously reading her notes. But viewers did see that when Palin delivered her answers, she would repeatedly glance down to check her talking points.

ThinkProgress has compiled a video documenting some of the instances where it was clear to the audience that Palin was propped up by written responses.

Politico reports that “on at least ten occasions, Palin gave answers that were nonspecific, completely generic, pivoted away from the question at hand, or simply ignored it: on global warming, an Iraq exit strategy, Iran and Pakistan, Iranian diplomacy, Israel-Palestine (and a follow-up), the nuclear trigger, interventionism, Cheney’s vice presidency and her own greatest weakness.”

“The problem for Mrs Palin, however, is that she often seemed to run out of talking points - at which point her answers would devolve into the confusing ‘blizzards of words,’” writes Newsweek’s Andrew Romano.

5. Biden and especially Obama need to push back at this new meme that the McCain ticket is pushing
about talking about the "past all the time"

Obama and Biden need to explain to McCain/Palin that which they do not understand. In order to know how to set a corrective or positive future course you need to know exactly where you are and exactly how you got there. I can understand why the Republican ticket would like to just pretend the last eight years did not happen and that they could just start with a clean slate. But the world does not work that way. Actions have consequences. The mistakes made by the Bush administration assisted in no small part by McCain and certain segments of the Republican party must be examined and understood. In understanding these mistakes and misjudgements Obama and Biden can develop a plan to fix the current mess in domestic and foreign policy and carry this country into the future with hope and pride.

Palin consistently states that it is not necessary to understand the cause of global warming in order to work to fix it. This is false. If fossil fuel use by humans is not causing the problem then why have any caps on carbon emissions? If low taxes for the wealthiest among us and deregulation in every form were the panacea of economic policy that Ms. Palin and McCain believe it to be we would be in an economic boon rather than in the worst decline since the great depression.

Never have two Politicians been more wrong about so much as McCain/Palin.

8. If that's a "good debater", I believe the standard has really been set low.
I'm not sure now, how to interpret what the media...in particular the sympathetic "lipstick on a pig" supporters refer to as "a good debater". She was at best weak. Obviously, she has no experience on 95% of the subject matter dealt with, and if winks and smiles and folksy jargon have an effect on "good debate skills", then I'm really confused.

She avoided being roasted alive. NOT through her actions, but through the courtesy extended by Senator Biden. He even had to laugh to himself a number of times at just how stupid and naive this hockey mom is.

God help us. I think much of the values of America have been turned UPSIDE DOWN and TURNED INSIDE OUT over the past eight years. Right is wrong, left is right, torture is "enhanced interrogation", a responsible redeployment is "cut and run", three purple hearts, a bronze star and two tours of duty in Vietnam is "a coward", a jack off 6 yr reserve service - being awol the last full year is "a hero". We don't know our ass from a hole in the ground any longer.

We really have nurtured in a nation of morons. This "lipstick pig" fits right in with that line of thinking. I'm HOPING the election of Obama/Biden will put an end to this lunacy. We are the ONLY nation I know of that is actually getting more stupid/ignorant/ass-back wards by the minute.

10. She is freekin scary!!
This whole thing is surreal! How can we have, running for VP, someone so blatantly unqualified (and heartless I might add), in the US? The woman has ambition 10x the greed of Wall Street and wants power for power's sake. Contrast that with Biden who has not enriched himself in all of these years as a Senator and does the job because he wants sincerely to make a positive difference in the lives of Americans! He had the patience of Job last night.

12. Are they allowed to have their talking points written down on something before the debate?
Didn't anybody check their paper pads before they went on stage? Or did she hide that in her hair too?
