This outrageous idea didn't seem to raise any eyebrows among the press, except for Lehrer. Scares me to death. No Social Security? No Medicare? No transportation spending? He would fund nothing but his war machine.

Even though the BIG crisis is here now, he is proposing LESS of an answer than his earlier canned-answer. Shows not only does he re-use his old material as if it is new, but he doesn't understand the gravity of today's state of the union.

2. Here in California, Schwarzenegger promised to cut waste

and spending. He couldn't find enough waste to balance the budget without sacrificing programs that were important to him and the rest of California.

As for the earmarks, is it wasteful to build an auditorium for the local high school? Depends on whether your kid goes to the school or not, doesn't it? Some of the earmarks are bad, but not all of them. A lot of good things get done thanks to earmarks. It's up to people who live in a particular area to decide whether their Congressman is wasting earmark money or not. There just isn't any way to decide that all earmarks are bad. They simply aren't.

LEHRER: What I’m trying to get at this is this. Excuse me if I may, senator. Trying to get at that you all — one of you is going to be the president of the United States come January. At the — in the middle of a huge financial crisis that is yet to be resolved. And what I’m trying to get at is how this is going to affect you not in very specific — small ways but in major ways and the approach to take as to the presidency.

MCCAIN: How about a spending freeze on everything but defense, veteran affairs and entitlement programs.

LEHRER: Spending freeze?

MCCAIN: I think we ought to seriously consider with the exceptions the caring of veterans national defense and several other vital issues.

We have no money left, so we have to spend everything on the military!
