1. Oh, that was great.
Out here on the west coast, I watched the re-run at 11 PST, but fell asleep before New Rules. Thanks for the post.

2. The best part of that entire show was Roseanne Barr.
She was totally on top of it and kept bringing up the "forged documents" as the basis for the entire Plame affair.

I noticed at the end all the men were talking to each other--Maher to Deepak (that guy is full of it), Milbank to Kuo (and did he get indignant when Roseanne called him out or what?)--and she was just sitting there being ignored. I think I'll fire off an e-mail to the show.

3. She also said "Bush stole the election--TWICE"
and looked out at the audience and said, "well, he DID".

4. I was shocked by the anti-Islam comments.
From his "the arm I cut off" comment to his "Islam is a religion of piece (sic)--a piece of you here, a piece of you there," he's giving legitimacy to some dangerous bigotry.

I'm currently reading Karen Armstrong's biography of Muhammad, so this is very much on my mind.

6. My first thoughts also.
I enjoy Bill's wit and perspective but as soon as the Arab bashing comes along in
a setting as fraught with violence, death and hypocrisy as this or any war I turn off.

New Rule-
Making jokes about people we bomb and kill at will regardless of their
innocence will heretofore be considered pig like.

10. Bill Maher has issues with religion in general, so this wasn't unexpected
He makes Christianity the butt-end of his jokes all the time.

11. Ah. I didn't know that.
No TV here, so I'd never heard of him until I started watching his video clips here on DU. Still, even though I'm an atheist myself, I don't like hearing anyone being made fun of because of their religious beliefs. And I think what Maher was saying about Muslims went beyond making them the butt of his jokes. It sounded seriously hateful to me. Thank you for the context, though.

5. Just so ya know...
Rosanne Barr came to Tallahassee with Michael Moore the night before the 2004 election. The appeared together at a huge get-out-the-vote rally at the civic center.

I was there!

8. She was spectacular. My husband, who has not appreciated her as much as I do, was

blown away.

She is smart, unapologetic and willing to call out bullshit.

I'm glad she called out Kuo, he has that RW smugness and spouts all the right words without seeming to have the substance behind them. His book strikes me, which I confess haven't read, as another "Bush made me promises and then didn't follow through" RW'er scorned tome.

He recovered nicely and then made that ridiculous statement about Reagan winning the Cold War.

This was the best Real Time of the season and compared to the ridiculous panel I'm seeing on MTP, (admit to some disappointment at Dana Priest's statements), Real Time's discussion groups are looking like an Algonquin round-table.

I nominate Roseanne Barr as our new, although even sharper and funnier, Dorothy Parker. MKJ

7. Check out the Overtime section on the official site while its up
Bill discusses America becoming fascist, and when the question of whether Gore should run again came up, Rosanne said "I think we should elect him again" to massive applause :bounce:
