Jeffrey Toobin on CNN

“I thought it was the worst speech by a nominee that I’ve heard since Jimmy Carter in 1980. I thought it was disorganized, I thought it was it was theme-less, I thought it was very, very boring…I personally cannot remember a single policy proposal that he made because they had nothing connecting them. I found it shockingly bad.”

3. My YouTube post:
McCain and Palin are the candidates of the American Taliban. Anyone dumb enough to elect them will get the kind of incompetent, dangerous, punitive, anal-regressive governing they deserve. This is the final curtain for the rethuglican party.

5. The Playbook is now Shockingly Transparent
McCain's speech brings the GOP 2008 campaign playbook out in the open. They have now made it too obvious. They are running the 2000 playbook all over again because they have decided it is their only chance! This even explains Palin.

In 2000 they ran GWB, a legacy with only a weak governorship on his resume, against a formidable and vulnerable sitting vice president. They figured it would be close and they had to do two things--energize the base and get enough independents to eke out a win. So how do they assure the base? Dick Cheney decides to put Dick Cheney, one of the most right wing members of the party, on the ticket. This was necessary for the base because GWB's father had let down the base in 1992, many stayed home and Clinton wrested the White House from the GOP. Cheney was the "guarantee" to the far right coalition of big business and the fundamental right. They were able to assure the Exxon/Enron and Dobson/Schlafly wingnuts that--even though George has to campaign as a "compassionate conservative" to win middle-of-the-roaders--don't worry, that won't be our agenda in office!

McCain's speech tonight reveals that the Rovians running his campaign are doing exactly the same thing. This year they are running a flip=flopping former "maverick" with a heroic story against a juggernaut of a movement candidate that has a message that is resonating. Barack's lighter--but not skimpy--resume makes him vulnerable, but at this time he's winning. They think they can make it close, but they need the same combination of events as 2000 to win. So, they put Palin on the ticket. This excites the fundies to no end. Forget the speculation that this was to try and get Hillary voters--if it turned out to get some, they'd take them, but this was their 2008 promise to the Exxon/Wall St and Dobson factions--in effect pay no attention to the man behind the curtain! The far right hasn't been excited about McCain since day one and they were lukewarm even after it was clear he'd get the nod. So now in effect they are saying to the wingnuts: "Don't worry that McCain has to campaign as a maverick again (don't forget he's been kissing your ass for 8 years), Palin is the "guarantee" that this post-partisan bullshit is the smokescreen we have to do to win--but that's not going to be our agenda...rest easy!"

Will enough of the American people fall for the same misdirection again? Those bastards are counting on it!

8. Yeah good analysis
I think the Hillary voter angle was a little stronger than you put it, but Palin was definitely a pick for the base. That gets more evident everyday. I think one problem for McCain is he's still struggling a little to get his base going, while Obama is bringing in new voters and Dems have had excellent turnout this year much more than the GOP, even when both sets of primaries were contested. I think Dem registration and turnout probably makes this race not quite as close as the polls make it appear.
