If you read Lakoff, he explains how republicans do "narratives," meaning they weave a story and a myth around a person. That is what they are doing with this woman. Narratives are based on media theory (which I teach at the university where I am employed). It is also a corporate marketing technique, which we know, of course, is what the republicans are all about.

In Sunday's NY Times, Maureen Dowd did a hilarious job of weaving a "narrative" around Sarah Palin.

Interestingly, Peggy Noonan doesn't think they do this well. Many on this board think the republicans do it consummately well.

This exchange is a goldmine. I hope someone transcribes it so we can see the subtleties, etc., that we are missing from just the audio.

She wrote speeches that incorporated narrative.

The problem with Palin is that her life and beliefs are supposed to be the narrative. Clearly that does not settle well with professional politicians. Palin is not a professional politician, not at all.

She was apparently selected to present a narrative of populism a la Andrew Jackson. Problem is Jackson was a war hero and well known as such before he ran for the presidency. Palin is out of nowhere. The only narrative she has is the one she is trying to persuade Americans to accept. The question is whether people will believe in and trust her narrative. Thus far, it hasn't rung very true.

She is supposed to be the woman who does it all. Clearly, she is not doing it all really well. In her professional life she is facing Troopergate and not being completely honest about her record. On the personal level, she is supposed to be the symbol of the clean, wholesome fundamentalist mother. But, her daughter has conceived a child out of wedlock as they say, thus casting doubt on her success in balancing family/career.

This appeal is similar to what the manufacturers of SUVs used to sell those hideous, impractical vehicles: rugged, tough.
