5. Great!
I thought the email with the comparison to Bush's selection of Harriet Meiers is about the closest parallel here. What a magnificent disaster (for McCain). Such desperation.

6. Wow...the response certainly is heartening
Our first female executive should NOT be a political ploy, and I must say that I'm pleasantly surprised that the American public has picked up so swiftly on this. Hillary's run was historic and inspirational..in contrast, this move by McCain is pathetic and the basest kind of pandering to identity politics.

7. In a way, this choice by McCain might represent
a merciful end for him since it will most certainly sink him, and he will then quickly fade from the collective memory as a soon to be forgotten also-ran - this surely a far better fate than being well and long remembered as the old guy who tried to beat Obama by choosing a hot mama as his running mate.

Goldwater didn't.

9. Well, that's true I guess,
but at least Goldwater had the good sense to choose a credible running mate in the person of one William E. "Bill" Miller. Voters rightly questioned and ultimately rejected Goldwater's politics, but unlike the case as will be with McCain, they didn't question his sanity.

10. John McCain,
you're no Barry Goldwater!

(But your election-night map might look just like his.)

13. Ha ha! You're right.
It might look very much like Goldwater's map! Let's hope so.

11. goldwater was a voice of principle; McCain... not so much these days
That's why Goldwater still mattered in the eighties.

12. All Americans aren't brain-dead, after all
That many taking the trouble to write in, is a strong reaction. Good to hear.
