1. I have always been a huge fan of Randy Newman.
It's good to get some perspective.

2. give me a break
I'm sick to death of everyone pointing out that we weren't the first to have bad leaders. This is the usual blather tossed out, and then everyone feels better about doing NOTHING to stop what the Bush Cabal is doing.

Randy, you're a hack -- learn some different chord changes. Every single piece of yours sounds like the intro to the Toy Story song.

4. Um, get irony much?
Edited on Sun Feb-25-07 07:42 PM by Hissyspit
That is his point. Like the way "Short People" wasn't REALLY about how horrible Short People are. You are completely missing it.

16. no I'm NOT missing it
He's joining in with the chorus looking for his photo op. And it's coincidental with his oscar nom.

Not much effort, as usual, to figure he gains more from this.

3. Newman's wicked humor
("defending" Bush and Cheney by comparing them to monsters of the past) is sharper than ever.

6. If you look at this stanza, it's hard to get upset:
A president once said,
“The only thing we have to fear is fear itself”
Now it seems like we’re supposed to be afraid
It’s patriotic in fact and color coded
And what are we supposed to be afraid of?
Why, of being afraid
That’s what terror means, doesn’t it?
That’s what it used to mean

Newman's got it right: we have nothing to be ashamed of except the same thing everyone has to be ashamed of -- really shitty leaders.

8. I've been a huge fan of his for years
He is the Colbert of music.

Or is Colbert the Randy Newman of comedians?

11. Sail Away
In america you'll get food to eat
Won't have to run through the jungle
And scuff up your feet
You'll just sing about jesus and drink wine all day
Its great to be an american

Ain't no lions or tigers-ain't no mamba snake
Just the sweet watermelon and the buckwheat cake
Evrybody is as happy as a man can be
Climb aboard, little wog-sail away with me

Sail away-sail away
We will cross the mighty ocean into charleston bay
Sail away-sail away
We will cross the mighty ocean into charleston bay

In america every man is free
To take care of his home and his family
You'll be as happy as a monkey in a monkey tree
You're all gonna be an american

Sail away-sail away
We will cross the mighty ocean into charleston bay
Sail away-sail away
We will cross the mighty ocean into charleston bay

13. A few words in defence of Incatatus ...
- he was a horse. IMO much better than Dick Cheney - who's a horse's ass.

17. I Wondered About Randy Last Night...
Seemed he's gotten so deep into the soundtracks (from the famous Newman family) that he had stopped doing the stuff I loved from the 70's. That was great to hear and see...and in that style that bites with a smile.

If anyone still thinks he's a wingnut...then go balistic over these lyrics:

No one likes us-I don't know why
We may not be perfect, but heaven knows we try
But all around, even our old friends put us down
Let's drop the big one and see what happens

We give them money-but are they grateful?
No, they're spiteful and they're hateful
They don't respect us-so let's surprise them
We'll drop the big one and pulverize them

Asia's crowded and Europe's too old
Africa is far too hot
And Canada's too cold
And South America stole our name
Let's drop the big one
There'll be no one left to blame us

We'll save Australia
Don't wanna hurt no kangaroo
We'll build an All American amusement park there
They got surfin', too

Boom goes London and boom Paris
More room for you and more room for me
And every city the whole world round
Will just be another American town
Oh, how peaceful it will be
We'll set everybody free
You'll wear a Japanese kimono
And there'll be Italian shoes for me

They all hate us anyhow
So let's drop the big one now
Let's drop the big one now
