Clearly, if protesters in Denver violate the law they should be arrested. And clearly if Denver's jails are overcrowded it makes sense to expand facilities.

However, as Democrats we would be very wise to keep in mind that the world will be watching Denver and that the behavior of the police and city authorities will reflect back on us.

I hope that the DNC has made clear to the Denver police in no uncertain terms that Democrats are tolerant of dissent and don't approve of police violence or abuse. I pray the police don't initiate violence against non-violent dissenters, and I pray that anyone arrested will be afforded all of their Constitutional rights in a timely and reasonable way.

If protesters in Denver are treated the same way as protesters at the RNC in 04, then we will have shamed our Party before the world. I hope what we see in this video is not a bad omen. The construction of fascist-style barbed-wire "protest pens" is already embarrassing enough. We are better than that.

gulp. takes my breath away. barbed wire "protest pens"?????

i don't friggin know my country anymore.

from youtube:
Denver officials weren't planning to reveal details about where activists would be detained in the event of mass arrests during the Democratic National Convention until after the event had started, but those plans were quickly dashed this week when CBS 4News reporter Rick Sallinger not only revealed that protesters would be locked up in a city-owned warehouse, but he also obtained clear video footage inside the facility, a building that includes barbed wire-topped cages and signs warning of stun-gun use.

2. A secret holding facility.
How lovely. :puke: What I loved from the video is that the reporters found the place open and without security, although the sheriff's representative said it was a secure facility. I guess if you plan on keeping holding pens secret, there's no real reason to think anyone would find out about them and want to check them out.

I'm so embarassed for my city. :(

6. of course, they may use the time-tested "catch, beat and release" method.
i'm extremely concerned about my city, home to the RNC.
i think there are some cops just itching to start swinging a baton the moment some kids don't follow a "lawful order" the instant it's given -- from behind a face mask and inaudible.

Minneapolis is supposed to be sending hundreds of cops to the RNC. Mark my words... the Minneapolis cops will be the first to go out of control. they are thumpers.

12. Denver has a mixed record, in my experience.
On the one hand, I've been to many protests here, some with hundreds of people (when Cheney was in town, or the annual Transform Columbus Day event), and haven't seen any police violence. But I've heard stories from long-time area activists (I've only been here about 8 years), and of course they did keep "spy files" on over 3000 area activists right after 9-11 (I was in them for being involved with a peace organization). And then, the Denver cops seem to love tasers, if the nightly news is any accurate indication. So while I'm hopeful they won't be too zealous, I won't be surprised if they let their authoritarian powers go to their heads.

It's a transcript of the video.

'Gitmo On The Platte' Set As Holding Cell For DNC
Written By Rick Sallinger

DENVER (CBS4) ― CBS4 News has learned if mass arrests happen at the Democratic Convention, those taken into custody will be jailed in a warehouse owned by the City of Denver. Investigator Rick Sallinger discovered the location and managed to get inside for a look.

The newly created lockup is on the northeast side of Denver. Protesters have already given this place a name: "Gitmo on the Platte."

Inside are dozens are metal cages. They are made out of chain link fence material and topped by rolls of barbed wire.

"This is a secured environment," Capt. Frank Gale of the Denver Sheriff's Department told CBS4. "We're concerned about how that's going to be utilized by people who will be potentially disruptive."

What was it...so many millions, I'd hate to guess, but I thought it was awfully high? $100M? Some ridiculous figure.

4. What activist are they expecting to cause enough trouble
to be arrested. I can't imagine any large groups wanting to protest the Democratic convention. The Republican convention yes, but the anti-war protest have died and I can't see the 5 or 10 freepers that show up will make much trouble. Just tell them boo and they will go crying home to mommy.

Posing as "leftists." They'll bus in a few dozen goons and try to stir up some shit, but I doubt it'll amount to much. Actual Democrats will be protesting in St. Paul, not Denver. I mean, duh. Right?

(LOL - I have no idea why the video is appearing in my post - I didn't put it in here!!!!! i swear!!!!)

and expose them - audio/video recordings, documentation, orders from officials...etc.

This country is all about false flag operations now. Since 9/11 (the biggest false flag op of them all) it seems to be par for the course.

15. The problem
Edited on Thu Aug-14-08 05:24 PM by Truth2Tell
is that if the Denver cops cave their heads in, then they win. It would be the same kind of dumb to overreact to these protests as it was for Bush to invade Iraq after 9-11. Why play right into their hands? Why not just let them protest without hassling them? They'll barely even make the news if the cops don't start shooting off tear-gas.

16. They clearly intend to provoke the cops: that's the whole point.
Edited on Thu Aug-14-08 05:36 PM by smoogatz
They want to create an atmosphere of discord and chaos around the convention. They want Obama and his supporters to get a whiff of tear-gas. Partly because they're a bunch of Republican rat-fucking scumbags who just like to be assholes, and partly because they want to steal Obama's convention thunder, and partly because they want the narrative post-convention to be "we can't trust the country to people who can't even keep their party's own extremists in line." Every news-model in the country would demand that Obama renounce the anti-war wing of the party--which is pretty much the whole party. So hoping the cops will be nice doesn't really address the issue: cops like to kick ass. They do so with little (or no) provocation. If these Recreate '68 morons do what they apparently intend to do, then yeah, I hope the Denver cops break a few nightsticks over their thick heads.

21. I wouldn't be shocked to see...
white supremacist show up in large numbers either. Obama is most certainly getting too close to the WH for their comfort. I really have mixed feelings about them getting their headed cracked good and hard. On one hand, part of me would absolutely love it because they are so deserving, but on the other hand, that's the kind of thing that could really disrupt the convention and steel the limelight from more important things.

24. can't really disagree with that...
Actually, it would be kind of nice to see them get out of hand, get their melons cracked, and then be ID'd on TeeVee as loyal republicans who came only to stir up shit. That could really be a turnoff to undecideds (how the hell can ANYONE be undecided at this point?) and possibly even some more moderate republicans.

31. Of course it is - notice how they keep trying to cover up that fact by saying
that the news people were "unauthorized" and that the facility was supposed to be a "secret".

Bullshit - if that was true then they would have been arrested for trespassing on government property and the Sheriff wouldn't have granted them a "sound bite" interview.

Psy-Op from start to finish.
