2. Why does this seem familiar?
Oh yeah, it's the same way we got into a war in Iraq.

3. k&r. While the terms may sound alike, they are spelled different
sufferage vs suffrage.

4. True, but the thing I found interesting
Was when a one of the girls had the meaning explained to her she sort of blanked and tried to continue on as if she knew what she was doing. I think there is a parallel here for the war. Once invested in a path the mind becomes concerned about image at the thought of backing down. So even a mistake will be carried forward rather than face the price of admitting ignorance or error.

7. Set on a prep school, a student goes around with a petition to end women's suffrage
Suffrage is of course the right to vote. He interviews many women and asks them all to sign the petition to end women's suffrage. Only one in all of the women he interviews knows what it is. Everyone else signs the petition. One woman is even told by a friend that it means the right to vote. But because she has already mentally committed to signing she continues doing so. It just didn't register in her mind.

Its funny/sad.

9. So...
What do they teach in schools nowadays? My 13 year old can do geometry, but if she didn't have a curious mind (and a mom who likes to actually converse with her about real issues), she would probably have signed something like that..of course, ours is a school district where they made her put a sweatshirt over her "Bet you'll vote next time hippie" tshirt, and take her "Students for Kerry" pin off of her backpack! :wtf:
