It's either a brazen, shameless lie that McCain somehow hopes will overwrite the unflattering truth about him or it's evidence that he has a serious memory problem. Either way, it's another unflattering McCain story that's barely gotten any media attention.That's how Eric Zorn of the Tribune sums up McCain's claim that he fought for the recognition of Martin Luther King Day in Arizona.

This is an inexplicably baffling remark. Here's why:
As a U.S. Rep., McCain voted against the creation of the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday in 1983, then in 1987 McCain supported Arizona Gov. Evan Meacham's decision to rescind the King holiday in his state. In the U.S. Senate in 1994, McCain supported a proposal “to prohibit federal financing for the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday Commission.”
