Different than the previous one I posted ... in this clip its hard not to see the parallels between Humphrey (Clinton) and McGovern (Obama) ... not quite sure what Wallace (actually his surrogates ... his wife is listed as "Mrs. George Wallace and not under her first name) ... wayward Ron Paul???

1. Don't see any of those parallels . . .
Humphrey had been a previous candidate --- '68 -- and I think that election was stolen
from him . . . for Nixon.

Remember, right after the '63 coup on government the large computer counters began to
come in and "media" were using them ---

They weren't about to go to the trouble of a coup only to have the public vote them out
again --

They're pretty much finishing off their work now in making the Democratic Party into
the Republican Party ---

4. Humphrey fought all the way to the Convention floor
Edited on Sun Aug-03-08 12:36 AM by Douglas Carpenter
Prior to the California primary Sen. Humphrey had agreed that California would be a winner take all primary. That was his sole strategy that he based everything on. Sen. Humphrey thought that by winning all the delegates in California, he would be able to convince enough undecideds that he could capture the nomination.

Of course, Humphrey lost the California primary and then joined with others who strongly opposed Sen. McGovern in convincing the credentials committee at the last minute to change the rules that had previously been a center piece of Sen. Humphrey's strategy for winning the nomination.

Needless to say, Sen. McGovern's people were not going to allow that. When the matter finally got to the convention floor, the convention reinstated the original rules and the original California delegation was reinstated.

Unfortunately, this diverted the McGovern camp from being able to focus on preparation for the convention, vetting a running mate and preparing for the general election.

Sen. McGovern cited his own experience in his plea to his old friends and former campaign workers Bill and Hillary Clinton in urging them to withdraw from the race and support Sen. Obama. Sen. McGovern had previously endorsed Sen. Clinton but felt strongly that after Indiana and North Carolina, Sen. Obama's nomination had become inevitable.

5. Jerry Brown was also still fighting when they got to the convention . . .
And I think the LBJ thing was very heated --- re JFK to the last --

And the McGovern problems with VP also show how important this spot is --

Look at Lieberman as "Trojan Horse" ---

Look at LBJ as dangerous to JFK ---

If Obama is smart he will pick someone way to the LEFT of him ---

6. but Jerry Brown had absolutely no hope whatsoever of capturing the nomination from Clinton in 1992
For all practical purposes Bill Clinton had an insurmountable lead only halfway into the primaries, and had secured a clear majority of the delegate count by June of 1992. The entire party hierarchy was completely behind Clinton well before the primaries ended.

McGovern had to battle the party elites all the way to the convention floor, many of whom were determined to stop him at any cost.

7. True . . . Jerry Brown was just fighting to try to gain some control over the party . . .
which continues to be big issue for progressives/liberals ---

8. ron paul?
it seems like wallace's people were making the argument that as the top popular vote getter he should get the nomination, for which he'd stay through the convention. sounds like another clinton parallel.
