My wife teaches music in the public schools. Over the last 30+ years, she has seen young kids with great talent (even though all the students benefit). In year's past she has taught reading and 2nd grade when the schools reduced the music program. Florida is talking about cutting out out music and art again as part of our budget cuts, so she is renewing her credential for reading again.

Obviously those girls learned to sing with some help. Whenever I see exceptional children, I can't help but think about the large proportion of them who started or got their opportunity from our universal school system. Everyone's parents aren't opera stars or have private lesson money, but year after year I see the terrific things that schools and teachers do under difficult circumstances. Last week was teacher appreciation week.

A big round of applause to the girls who sang AND the teachers who work year after year with young children.
