13. He had to do it, but it is expected pandering, not "the right thing"
Both candidates are forced to do this. Hopefully we will grow past this kind of thing.

15. Wright wants Obama to lose
As Obama said in Philadelphia, Wright doesn't see that things have improved or can improve in the future. Wright is invested in things as they were when he was a young man. That's what gives him an audience for his rants. If Obama wins, everyone will know that Wright's days are gone. The future that we and Obama want to build will make Wright obsolete and he knows it. To Wright, the U.S. Government is the enemy and if Obama wins, he becomes the commander of Wright's self-declared enemies. It makes total sense that Wright would stab Obama in the back.

2. As much as I think he shouldn't have disowned his pastor like that in such a public way...
Obama had the right answers for all the questions he was given. Bravo and lets MOVE the f#%k ON!

3. If this is how he handles a difficult press conference, I'm encouraged
I've had people in my life go nuts and wouldn't want to be judged based on them.

This was, to me, a nice presidential style.

4. Well done.
If I'd have been in his shoes, I'd be calling Wright a pompous prick and telling unsavory stories about him.

It's admirable that he called this press conference to clear the air. That's how I would like a President to respond in similar circumstances -- setting the record straight, and letting us know where he stands.

Thanks babylonsister!

5. This is unfortunate for Obama on a personal level
Clearly by looking at the expression on Barack's face, he is being torn apart internally. Obviously he's held Rev. Wright in high regard for the last 20 years. For Wright to now be so public about some of the controversial aspects of his beliefs must be difficult for Obama to face. Now he's being put in the position of having to publicly denounce someone for beliefs that while he disagrees with, he probably would have just rolled his eyes at. I imagine him feeling hurt by hearing and seeing someone he once respected doing things that he doesn't respect and on another level feels guilty about having to condemn him so loudly.

7. The Rev has been BO's pastor for 20 years
how could he possibly be unaware of or disapproving of the Rev's views? The old guy has become a political liability and had to be dumped like yesterdays garbage.

6. so Obama finally throws the Rev under the bus
in the hope that its not too late. Maybe he can get Rod Parsley, Pat Robertson or Benny Hinn to be his spiritual adviser. Too bad Jerry Falwell is dead.

11. It amazes me how even in the "Progressive" community, we have embraced intolerance of opinion
This whole deal is such a non-issue, but both the Republicans and many Democrats cannot tolerate dissident thought.

<sarcasm>How dare that Pastor express angry or critical thoughts, if they are not all based on the ruling ideologies! </sarcasm>

14. I haven't seen any posts in this thread that suggest
that Rev Wright should not be allowed say what he wants, either from the pulpit or on TV interviews. I certainly don't want to censor (or censure for that matter) him. His parishioner and friend of more than 20 years, Obama, is the one who is disavowing the Rev because what the Rev is saying now and has been saying for the last 20 years are proving to be an embarrassment to Obama. Obama is the one who found it politically expedient to throw his old friend under the bus. The pukes are already using Wright's comments to bash Obama. They have no compelling reason to stop doing it. Its just a small taste of what he can look forward to.

As Nixon might say, were he still alive. "how will it play in Peoria?" The answer is: not well.
