A refresher for some Democrats:

What is Liberalism? Well, in spite of what moral giants like
Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, Michael Savage and
most right wingers in general say, it is NOT Communism.

Did you know that Liberalism supports individual liberty as
the most important political goal and Liberalism is opposed to
government intrusion into private life.

Or that it supports free trade, a market-based economy and
supports the right to have and use private property?

How 'bout that Liberalism opposes government regulation of
literature, art, academics, gambling, sex, prostitution,
abortion, birth control, terminal illness, alcohol, and other
controlled substances?

No? You need to turn off Fox News and Right Wing cry baby talk
shows and expand your horizons.

Here's what will make the fur on the backs of the
conservatives bristle about Liberalism.

Liberalism supports laws against discrimination in housing and
employment, and against pollution of the environment, it
supports the provision of welfare, including unemployment
benefits and housing for the homeless, supported by
progressive taxation. Also Liberalism advocates that schools,
libraries, museums, and art galleries are to be supported by
taxes.

There it is! That linchpin of contempt for the rightists-
TAXES! Yeah, Liberalism believes that a government of, by and
for the people is capable of as much good as off shore, tax
dodging, overseas labor using corporations... and then some.

You get what you give. The problem with American government
today is that the citizens are ignorant, lazy and brain
washed.

Be Liberal, Be Proud!

4. Conservatism
is a term used to describe political philosophies that favor tradition and gradual change, where tradition refers to religious, cultural, or nationally defined beliefs and customs.

2. liberals = power behind virtually every improvement in human history
Edited on Tue Mar-18-08 01:34 AM by Juche
Liberals supported = women's suffrage, environmental standards, social security and medicare, child abuse laws, racial equality, humane treatment of gays, ending slavery, individual freedom, making human rights a cornerstone of foreign policy, minimum wages, the right to form unions, rule of law, ending poverty and disease overseas.

Conservatives oppose(d) many of these things. Conservatives also, if you read research, tend to have an authoritarian, dogmatic, fear based outlook on life.

It is time to aggressively reframe liberalism vs. conservatism. Liberals generally believe the social, political & economic should be as fair and inclusive as possible. Conservatives feel the social, political & economic system should be an exclusionary system where only a minority count (wealthy white heterosexual christian males) backed up by social darwinism. If you are a non-wealthy, non-white, GLBT, non-christian or a woman you are on your own.

5. Wes Clark:
'We live in a liberal democracy....That’s what we created in this country. I think we should be very clear on this. You know, this country was founded on the principles of the Enlightenment... It was the idea that people could talk, reason, have dialogue, discuss the issues. It wasn't founded on the idea that someone would get struck by a divine inspiration and know everything right from wrong. I mean, people who founded this country had religion, they had strong beliefs, but they believed in reason, in dialogue, in civil discourse. We can’t lose that in this country. We've got to get it back.'

8. No
There are legitimate differences between the two agendas. Progressivism is the desire to make society work for as many as possible, conservatism tends to oppose this trend. That is fact, not opinion. There are exceptions obviously, but for the most part it has been progressives who fought to make life better for all.

12. freedom from coercion

I subscribe to a liberal orientation simply within the context that one should be free from coercion. But, I still have to develop the full implications of this basic premise and a frame of articulation. Work, work, work.
