Need to find best cell phone set up for hearing impaired Dad

Dad lost Mom in January and is a very active 82, uses hearing aids because he has upper register hearing loss and tinnitus. He manages on the land line with an amplifier. What I am finding on google today they keep telling me is currently unavailable.

I am hoping not to have to buy 5 phones/plans to get one that works.

Because Dad has always been absent minded I was looking for a phone with adequate technology and quick CS that if lost, would not be a huge loss.

or a Sidekick 3? These are the cell technologies that your dad can probably handle if he is good in typing SMS/email messages?
