Security officers to march on MLK Day

http://www.workdayminnesota.org/index.php?news_6_3452

20 January 2008
MINNEAPOLIS - Security officers represented by Service Employees International Union Local 26 and supporters will march Monday in honor of Martin Luther King Day and to seek justice on the job.
Marchers will meet at 11 a.m. Monday at the Minneapolis Labor Center, 312 Central Ave., where they will board buses to go to the march, which is being held at an undisclosed location. The event culminates a week of activities in the officers' campaign for a fair contract.

Negotiations currently are under way between several security companies and Local 26, which represents about 1,000 security officers.

The Martin Luther King Day march will put the spotlight on non-union Hannon Security, organizers said.

"For a few years now, security officers have been fighting for justice at Hannon Security," the union said.

"They've been fighting for economic justice over Hannon's lack of affordable healthcare.

"And now, since October, Hannon officers have been fighting for racial justice as well, after filing charges with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission over racially discriminatory hiring and training practices."
