CWA and Jobs with justice heat up Verizon campaign in Philly - 08/22/2006

By Jesse Russell
The Communications Workers of America have increased
pressure on Verizon Wireless for what it says is union-busting
tactics. Last week the CWA, Jobs with Justice, and Students
Against Sweatshops gathered in downtown Philadelphia
chanting slogans such as "Verizon, Union Busting's Got to
Go" and "What's Disgusting? Union Busting." The
organization says that ever since Verizon merged with MCI,
work that typically would go to union represented workers is
now being shifted to workers with no union representation or
benefits. It is part of a larger campaign by Jobs with Justice.
The workers' rights organization has been asking
Philadelphians using Verizon to change providers until the
company starts to respect workers' rights. The CWA is
working alongside the International Brotherhood of
Electrical Workers (IBEW) across the country to inform customers
about Verizon practices.
