Bi-Lingual Union Organizer

BCTGM Local #22 represents workers in the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers, and Grain Millers industries throughout Minnesota and western Wisconsin. We are looking for a fulltime Union Organizer to organize workers at new worksites and to assist in mobilizing current members for contract campaigns.

Qualifications:
• A minimum of two years college
• Fluency in Spanish, including reading, writing and speaking
• Previous union organizing experience preferable
• Familiarity with the National Labor Relations Act
• Basic knowledge of our industries
• Good interpersonal skills
• Strong communication skills
• Experienced in working with diverse populations
• A demonstrated passion for organizing working people

Responsibilities:
• The ideal candidate will be expected to maintain a flexible work schedule; working weekends and evenings is possible.
• Research organizing targets
• Conduct one on one visits with workers
• Identify, recruit, and develop leadership for an organizing committee
• Work with the organizing committee to plan and conduct organizing campaigns and contract campaigns
• Help to organize workplace actions
• You will report directly to the Local’s leadership

Salary and benefits are negotiable starting at $40,000, depending on experience.

POSITION TITLE: Community/Political Organizer
DATE: June 23, 2011
DEPARTMENT: Field Staff, Unit 2
ACCOUNTABLE TO: Director of Political and Legislative Action
AVAILABLE: Immediately

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Works to promote and achieve the goals of the Minnesota Nurses Association (MNA). Working with a team to plan, implement and evaluate the political, legislative, and community initiatives of MNA in accordance with Association policy. Duties may include, but are not limited to:
• Implementing political and legislative grassroots action plans, including email, phone, door-to-door, and earned media campaigns.
• Coordinating candidate screenings.
• Working with members, other labor, and coalition partners to develop campaign plans and strategies to support the Main Street Contract with the American People.
• Building, training and maintaining a network of political activists.
Other duties as assigned.
Travel is required, including overnight stays.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Bachelors degree is preferred. Registered Nurse is preferred.

Experience: Knowledge of labor unions; understanding of political and legislative processes; familiarity with online voter databases; good oral and written communication skills; demonstrated ability to motivate, lead, build strong working relationships and hold others accountable.

SALARY: Per MNASO Local 1, Unit 2 Contract Agreement.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Works to promote and achieve the goals and priorities of the Minnesota Nurses Association (MNA). Working with a team to plan, implement, and evaluate the Economic and General Welfare initiatives of MNA in accordance with Association policy. Duties may include, but are not limited to, organizing, educating, representing individual members, elected leadership, and bargaining units as assigned by the Director of Collective Bargaining. Travel is required, including overnight stays.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Bachelors degree is preferred. Registered Nurse is preferred.

Experience: Demonstrated knowledge of unions, labor relations, and labor law required. Experience as a union advocate in areas of internal and/or external organizing, contract negotiations, and contract administration is required. Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in the health care industry is preferred. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to lead and motivate others are essential. Excellent analytical and problem solving skills are necessary.

SALARY: Per MNASO Local 1, Unit 2 Contract Agreement.
