"We're more American than Detroit" -Hyundai
Source: http://money.cnn.com/2010/10/21/autos/hyundai_american_production/index.htm

"By next year about 80% of the vehicles Korean automaker Hyundai sells in the United States will be built here, the CEO of the automaker's U.S. arm told CNNMoney.

That percentage would likely put Hyundai at the top of the "Made in the USA" rankings among all automakers operating in the U.S., including Ford, Chrysler and General Motors."

"Krafcik pointed out that Hyundai plans to move production of its popular Elantra from Korea to the automaker's Montgomery, Ala., plant later this year.

"I'm going to build my three best selling cars in the U.S.," Krafcik said. "Ford builds its best selling car in Mexico.""

My mom has been talking about getting me a new car within the next year or two. I'm thinking about putting Hyundai on the list.
The car HAS to be made in the USA. I refuse to compromise on that.

1. SocialistLez, considering your name includes "socialist" and you've posted in the "labor" forum...
...I do hope you'll investigate Hyundai's labor practices at home and abroad before considering a purchase of one of their vehicles.

After all, WalMart employs an awful lot of Americans too.

2. Maybe the idea of domestic content legislation should be expanded to all manufactured goods
If this same argument -- "my Made In USA is better than yours" -- were also going on about lawn-mowers, microwave ovens, children's toys, aluminum siding, etc., etc., Americans wouldn't be slipping into Third World poverty.

3. When they go union, maybe I'll listen to them.
Also, they have to stop making such crappy cars.

4. IF they allow employees here to unionize, I'd be OK with getting one

Hyundai Union Agrees to End Strike

SEOUL, South Korea -- Hyundai Motor Co.'s union decided to end a strike Wednesday after the company agreed to pay full bonus payments, officials said, resolving one of the latest obstacles facing South Korea's largest automaker.

Hyundai agreed to pay the remainder of an agreed bonus of 1 1/2 months, but only after workers meet production goals to make up for losses incurred from strikes last year and the latest walkouts, according to a deal signed between company and union officials.

Hyundai union approves contract
Published: July 24, 2010 at 11:44 AM

ULSAN, South Korea, July 24 (UPI) -- Workers at South Korea's Hyundai Motor Company voted Saturday to accept a new contract and avoid a strike, Hyundai and the union announced.

About 58 percent of the 42,286 members of the union approved the package, which included a pay raise and a bonus payment.

South Korea's Yonhap News Agency said the new contract headed off a strike at Hyundai's main plant in Ulsan, which has been hit by strikes on virtually a yearly basis since 1987.

"The approval marks a new milestone for Hyundai's labor-management relationship," Hyundai Vice President Kang do-han told reporters.

5. Union-made is important to me as well but considering that the "Big Three"
are trying to grow the ranks of non-unionzed employees, it's a damned if you do...damned if you don't sort of thing.

I'd much rather support American workers than Chinese, Indian, Vietnamese, etc. workers any day.

I'd love to see every worker earn living wages but I don't see that happening in my lifetime.
